Where, besides Maplewood pool, can my kids get swim lessons? My daughter is 9 and can only keep her head above water and it seems to me that lessons offered for her age group usually assume a basic skill level that is too advanced for her. She won't want to be in a class with 5 year olds. Any suggestions?

My daughter has taken swimming lessons at The Connection in Summit. She's only 3, but they offer them for all ages and levels. I like it there...nice quiet pool and good instructors.

My 9 year old daughter can now swim across the pool - An enormous improvement since last September when she couldn't even THINK about getting her face wet!

We tried the free group classes at the Maplewood Pool during the past summers but she would just quietly slip to the back of the pack and refuse to participate in anything she found too scary.

We enrolled at the Connection for Women & Families in Summit and hired a private teacher. Semi-private actually, she taught both my then 8 year old and 5 year old for 30 minutes a week for $45.00. It was worth every penny for the peace of mind I get in return. I now know that even though they may never be super strong swimmers - they know the basics of how to stay afloat and swim to safety.

You can also try "Kristie's School of Fish" in East Hanover. It's a bit further but unlike the Y, JCC, Connection etc there's no additional membership fee. They have all age/level based groups (e.g. 7-9yr old beginners) with 1 to 3 instructor ratio. Toll free 877-FISH SWIM
Spring sessions end June 28 so I assume there's a summer session coming up - I'm waiting for them to send me the next brochure.
I haven't used them yet but plan to this summer.
Phil

Our five year old has been taking private lessons (not expensive!) with an instructor at Seton Hall. They also offer group lessons. The facility is GREAT as is the instructor. Speak to Ron Farina, head coach @ Hall Aquatics.
