looked for threads on this but don't see it - anyone have an opinion on whether NJ Transit is timely these days during morning rush hour?
I am planning on taking the 7:11 for an 8:00 meeting - and will be in a jam if it is late. Should I suck it up and get on the 6:39 (ouch that's early!)? thoughts? experiences of late? thanks in advance.

I'm sure i'm jinxing myself by saying this, but now that the weather is more predictable, the trains i've taken in the morning have been fine. I typically take the 7:43, but when i have 8am meetings, i take the 7:11. I always make them, but it only gives me about 5 minutes to play with when you tack on the travel from Penn to my office.

Not knowing where you work, i'd say for routine 8am meetings, stick with the 7:11, but for occasional biggies (as it sounds like this one may be), play it safe and go with the earlier one.

thanks for the input. I will be heading to Madison between 49th and 50th. I am planning on taking the E (likely faster than a cab, avoiding wait time at a cab stand and frequent delays in getting cross town) to 53rd and Lex, and then figuring it's a 7-8 minute walk from there to Madison and 50th. If the train is on time, this path should be no problem, but...
thanks again for your personal experience and advice!

Isn't there a 5th Ave. stop on the E? That would leave you a block closer than the Lexington Ave. station, and you'd be off the train a stop sooner.

There is a 5th Ave stop -- and the E is not stopping at Lex during rush hour because of contruction.

personally, I'd take the 6:39 and remember the E doesn't stop at Lex during rush hour -- get off at Fifth!

I am a nervous-nilly, you'd really be pushing it to madison and 50th by 8:00 taking the 7:11. Makes my stomach churn just thinking about it.

Granted I've been doing this for only three months, but I've had only two delays in that time in the morning, and once it was because of a combination of mechanical difficulties and a sick passenger on the train ahead of us. I sometimes have to go to court way the hell up near Yankee Stadium. I take the 8:25 into Penn and it always gets me to the Bronx in time for a 10 a.m. court appearance, except one time -- the aforementioned mechanical difficulty/sick passenger incident, and even then I was only five minutes late and the judge was cool about it.
* * *
I respectfully dissent.

algebra2 - I am a bit nervous myself, and absolutely hate to be late, especially for anything remotely important, which this meeting definitely is. with some regret, then, I have decided on the 6:39 which gives me a very comfortable cushion. I hate showing up to an appointment sweating and stressed out about non-substantive stuff, i.e., whether I am on time!!
thanks for the input, all - I REALLY appreciate the voices of experience, and subway tips! hope all of our commutes go well to kick off the weekend!

You are much better off taking the earlier train. Five to ten minute delays are entirely possible and you may have a wait for the E train at Penn Station.

If you want to save some time, get on the back of the Midtown Direct train (last car if possible). This will leave you off on the 8th Avenue end of the platform, which is much closer to the entrance to the E train than the front (7th Avenue) end of the Midtown Direct train would be. Also, you should avoid going all the way up to the main level of the station. It is much easier to find the E train from the lower level.

You can take a bus from 32nd street that goes across town and heads North on Madison. There are two separate buses (the number of them escapes me) but after one fills up, another shows up immediately during AM rush.

It's just off 7th Avenue, about 100 feet up 32nd!

Take the E train, (get in near the end of the train, closest to where U go up the stairs to the E train. Go about 50 ft down the platform, maybe the 3rd car down) it's 7 minutes to the 5th Ave & 53rd street stop. U will get out at the corner of Brooks Bros. & the Rolex Bldg., just walk over one block to Madison Avenue. This is my route to work EVERY day. The buses from 32nd street get stuck in traffic and WILL take LONGER!

follow up, to let all the good people who helped out with such great advice know how it went:
took the 6:39 (there's actually GREAT parking and no lines at the ticket/coffee windows at this hour!! silver lining here), made it to the Palace Hotel by about 7:40, giving me time to make a pitstop, wipe the sweat from my brow (why oh why do I always sweat beachballs trying to get around Manhattan?!), and be cool, calm, collected at my meeting.
many thanks to all for the fantastic, detailed advice. I may private line some of you for future forays; the specificity of your advice is incredible!
(stefano - can I still get the two weeks pay? )
