I'm giving directions to some out of town guests, and would like to be able to tell them just how far -- in miles -- we are from Manhattan. Anyone happen to know this figure off the top of their heads? |

I believe that South Orange is 14 miles from NYC (The World Financial Center), "as the crow flies". If you need the actual road mileage you may want to use an online mapping system such as yahoo maps, or mapsonus. |

According to Mapquest, it is 22.93 miles from the intersection of 42d Street and 7th Ave to Maplewood Ave, Maplewood. Mapquest also says this trip should take 28 minutes. I suppose if you were driving in the middle of the night, and there were literally no one else one the road, and all of the lights were in your favor (or you ignored them), this trip might take 28 minutes. |

I don't mean to split hairs here, but I drive the route from Maplewood Avenue to Times Square all the time and it is always 20 miles. Even taking a variety of routes, doesn't change the distance by more than 1/2 mile. yahoo map 409&RouteType=Quickest&RouteUnit=Miles,msn |

I drive to manhattan almost everyday for work and it takes me 38 minutes to get from my driveway to the parking garage, assuming there are no accidents along the way. The thing with me is that I drive around 3:00 in the afternoon so the traffic is going the other way at that time. |

Last night: Left parking garage on 27th & 2nd at 8:33p. Dropped brother off on Park & 20th, sat and talked for a few minutes. Came home via 7th Ave/Holland/Pulaski/78. Stopped for gas at Denco. Home to Elmwood Ave. 22 miles & 43 minutes. (Thread drift: babies are adorable!)

Coming soon to a theater near you - The MOL version of "2Fast, 2Furious". Watch as your favorite posters race from a mid-town Manhattan parking garage to Maplewood Village. Tension mounts as they all are trapped in the Vaux Hall road detour. Thrill as Chris Dickson ignores the "Bridge Out" signs by Millburn Mall, and jumps the river over to Millburn Ave. |

I'm all ready for racing. I have those adorable Mini Cooper pop out and fold up cardboard cars taped to my monitor as we speak. They were in this month's New Yorker. Step number 6 in the assembly instructions are "Push around desk while making silly motoring noise with your mouth." You simply can not beat that British sense of humor. |

You guys remind me of an old cartoon I saw years ago. A helmeted and goggled driver is sitting in a race car in front of a sign saying "Blueblood Estates, 30 Minutes from Downtown". It is night and a fat cat real estate developer is leaning over the driver and says, "OK Mario, let's see if you can get it down to 25 minutes." |

When I worked in Manhattan, near Lincoln Center, I would make the drive from here in Maplewood to work in just about 25 minutes. Granted, it was 5 AM and I was a blur on the New Jersey Turnpike. Average highway speed: 75 mph |

There is a site http://www.mapsonus.com that I really like. The maps are not as clear, but there are some interesting options with the directions. 1. fastest route (which is usually best), 2. shortest route (good for cycling), 3. avoid major highways (good for cycling) 4. favor major highways. It also lets you choose an intermediate destination. If you have to go from point A to both B and C, it can tell you which order to visit them in for best travel time. It says that it's 18.4 miles from Maplewood Av to Times Square. That could be accurate, but I don't believe their 25 minute estimate. Interestingly, they say to take I-280 instead of I-78. http://mapsonus.switchboard.com/bin/maps-route/usr=treingold/id=6d338a9a/c=8611/ isredir=1/ Tom Reingold

69 Chevy? full-sized? like an Impala? I guess a 396 could get it around pretty good. I've got a 55 Chevy 283- mebbe 300 hp. We oughta race down Springfield ave sometime. HA! Curt |
