Move to Essex in the UK and you will find plenty of nice public courses. Here in NJ you're limited to Frances Byrne in West Orange, Hendricks Field, I think in Belleville and Weequahic in Newark. I've only played Byrne so I cannot comment on the others. |

The county courses are not very good, but there are more "public" courses available. Check out http://www.njgolfer.com or http://www.teetimeking.com How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?

Francis is a nice track. The others aren't worth walking your dogs in. And in Weeqauhic you need to keep it in the fairway less you run over a dead body in the rough. I suggest you invest $200, as I did, and join Morris County as a registered non-resident if you're interested in nice courses (the fee gives you resident rates and some advance tee time access--play 6-7 times and you make the money back). Between Flanders and Sunset you have two of the best public courses in New Jersey. Like all of Essex County services, their golf sucks. |

I play from time to time on the East Orange municipal course (located on Parsonage HIll Road in Short Hills, part of the East Orange Water Commission land and reservoir). It's not a great couse, but it is playable and generally available. It's not a county course. Last time I played, walking on was $30 weekdays and $35 weekends. |

The only problem with East Orange (other than that it's a pancake) is that (in my expereince) you can't get a weekend morning tee time, even if there's no one on the course. How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?

I agree, EOGC is not the most challenging layout, but several holes (3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13 and 14) have significant changes in elevation. Also, the doglegs on the par-5 7th and the par-4 15th holes can be tricky. I don't try to play weekend mornings, so the spots that go to members (or are at least reserved by members) don't directly affect me. I think you can get out in the late morning or early afternoon without too much toruble. |
