Hi We need a second car and my husband found a 99 used Discovery II, it looks great, has 80k on it (from highway use) one owner who says it's never been in an accident and he has taken good care of it. These cars which once sold for TONs depreciate quickly and this one is selling for 12k. I looked up reviews, the 1998's have bad reviews (lots of repairs, hoses etc) but can't find many on the 99, the few I find are good (but were written in 99 by new car owners). Anyone know if these are lemons? I feel pretty leery with the low price...any advice?? |

Check out www.kellybluebook.com for private sale prices. $12,000 wouldn't appear to be all that much of a bargain for a regular model. In general 80.000 is a lot of mileage for a three and a half year old vehicle and some repairs and maintenance have to be expected. In human years that is about like being 65 and having been married five times. Zersonally I love British cars, but reliability and long life are not in a general sense among their attributes. A buddy, a Morgan fan, has a T Shirt that reads, "Robert Lucas, Prince of Darkness" (Lucas is the company that provides most English cars with their electrical systems)

check out Consumer Reports' buyers guide, and also epinions.com for reviews on this particular year. edmunds.com also offers used car values. i would not rely totally on the values obtained from kelley or edmunds, they are not as good at telling what fair market value is as looking in your local papers. 80,000 miles is high for a '99 - I am looking for a car, around '99 or '00, and won't consider anything over 50,000 miles. the repair work really ratchets up at around 75,000, imo. a friend of mine who has a new-ish Land Rover seems to ALWAYS be taking his to the shop. |

You should also check the vehicle history through Carfax. This will tell you if the car has had any accidents. Never trust the owner's word that a vehicle is accident free. I've been thinking of Land Rovers myself (my 4Runner goes off-lease in October) and I hear both good and bad things. Good luck. |

Take a look at Edmunds.com also and possibly epinions.com I use both those sites when shopping for vehicles. |
