My parents live in the town where her family home is, where she died. I recall seeing her around town occasionally; one July 4th, she conducted the local band in the Star-Spangled Banner. People in town were very cool about respecting her privacy, and she was a lovely person to have as a neighbor. |

People treated her pretty well when she lived in New York City as well, where she could often be seen tooling around the upper East side on a bicycle. |

I think I'm going to rent some Hepburn movies; I had forgotten how very good they were til I saw some of the clips on TV last night and this AM. If you're interested, here's what my father wrote to me today about events surrounding her death: Yes, the press is all over the place; all three network affiliates plus Fox news had dish antennas on trucks down at the Point today---while we were having the Economic Development Commission's annual Spirit of Saybrook award ceremony. No, I didn't see any famous "anchor" persons! The police here in O.S. had already prepared an emergency plan for when Ms. Hepburn died. The police dept was not-ified about ten minutes after her death; at the request of the P.D., this information was held from the public for about two hours. During that time police cars were sent to Fenwick to control access to the road that passes by her home; you probably remember the time we saw her by the tennis courts, which are right across the road from her shorefront home. No one was allowed to enter that area unless they lived there or had a defined destination; this was primarily to keep the press from being a nuisance. Police boats were also stationed in Long Island Sound to keep away the curious and the press. You will probably see a lot more of Old Saybrook tonight on the networks! |
