Just got a bill for 3rd-quarter taxes, and it appears that I am now being taxes about $200 more per quarter -- $800 more per year. That SUCKS!! I was not informed of any reassessment of my property. What gives?! Anyone else see a mid-year increase like this? |

The 3rd Quarter bill is an estimate since the final Essex County budget is never finalized in time. While we are all positive our taxes will once again increase, it is never quite as drastic as the estimate makes it appear. Is there any end to all of these increases???? |

Jrf, thank you for that info. I really appreciate it, and I am somewhat pacified. Still, though, you have to question the logic of taxing people out of their homes. Is that any way to build a community? |

Hello South Orange: We have the same problem in Maplewood. Property taxes are out of control! That is why I am running for Township Committee in Maplewood. Both South Orange and Maplewood are affected by the money wasted at the county level and the inefficiencies of the SO-M School System. I know that South Orange people cannot vote for me but check out our website anyway. www.maplewoodrepublicans.com. Ed May

Schools take 55%. County takes another 27%. I think everyone wonders what we get from the county (other than the occasional road construction delay). I think we're all bozos on this bus.

I thought the county took closet to 19% ( I do wonder what we get from the county) and the schools are now up to 56%. The property taxes pay for police, fire, road repairs, recreation facilities, snow plowing and in general making sure the village runs smoothly. Of course there are other items and expenses, but those are the big ones.

Mr. Rosner: In itemizing for what the municipal taxes pay, you forgot to mention that they pay, via a PILOT granted by the BOT, to subsidize the profits of a large developer (of Gaslight Commons) so that the school taxes for the rest of us go UP. You, and other BOT members then rave about how you've kept municipal tax increases low, while "the schools are now up to 56%" (quote from your post of 10:17 AM on 7/9.) |

wASHASHORE : Your last post on this thread may be your most inaccurate and absurd one to date. Congratulations. |

Woodstock: As tiring as is Mr. Rosner's continual sniping at the rise in school taxes, as if he had nothing to do with that. If he agrees to stop sniping at the school budget - which, by the way, is MUCH BETTER MANAGED than the municiapl budget, i.e. the S.O. annual budget is 25 million, and S.O.'s annual debt is 35 million, while the School Board's budget is THREE TIMES the size of S.O.'s budget, and has an annual debt of only $25 million - I'll agree to stop reminding him about his complicity in its rise. |

Washashore, it's not the sniping, it's the innuendo and accusations without proof. You continually ask leading questons that you pretend to know the answer to, but provide no proof. You make accusations about Mr. Gross' appointment as beig Patronage, but give no proof, nor do you back up your claims. I don't want you to stop sniping. Far from it. I want you to back up what you say with REAL, verifiable facts. Otherwise they're simply empty accusations, and you come off more as a crank than a concerned citizen. And sorry about the aliens crack in another thread. I was tired and it was late. I think we're all bozos on this bus.

Washashore: You really do take statements out of context and make up your own facts. I was correcting the percentages that someone else posted earlier. By the way, in 1986, 49% of the tax bill went to the schools. Now it is up to 56%. I never commented on the performance of the BOT or why I thought the school budget has had percentage increases much greater than the village or the county. The Gaslight Commons PILOT had no affect on the school taxes or their budget so your statement makes no sense. I never compared the job the village does with it's budget to the job the BOE does with their budget.

Mr. Rosner: Let's deal with real, verifiable facts: S.O.s annual budget and its annual debt. Please explain how South Orange, which has an annual budget of $25 million, has managed to accrue $35 million in annual debt. |

Carefully and over time. Are you asking how the debt was accumalated? What each line in the budget is? You would be well served by making an appointment with the Mr. Gross (even if you don't like him) to get the answers to all your questions regarding the budget and the debt. If I start to answer your question with a short answer it is only going to beg more questions (and that would be reasonable). It would make more sense for you to have discussion so that each answer that might invite more questions can be answered and be able to see the actual numbers. You might learn something and come away with a better understanding instead of constantly attacking everyone in village hall. Or you might want to come to a BOT meeting and ask the questions in public. Next meeting is on 7/21/2003 at 7:30P.M. |

I, too, am glad to see that the 30-year Gaslight Commons PILOT has had a stabilizing effect on taxes in South Orange. Right. Go ahead Mr. Matthews. Take a shot. |
