I have a friend who is getting a divorce and wants to relocate. She wants to be closer to the city and I (having recently moved to SO) think this would be a great place for her and her son to land. She is concerned, however that we are all full families here. Are there many single parent families out here? and where are they?

Leslie

Welcome to MOL. There are many single parent families in SO-M. Suggest you talk to the Newcomers Club President ~ you can link to their site thru MOL.

Leslie:

I know of a few single parent households in SO/M but most of the households in both towns seem to be either couples with children at home or empty nester couples whose children have grown. The majority of activities in town are also very much oriented towards families with children.

Either South Orange or Maplewood would be an excellent place to raise children but I don't know how much opportunity the single parent would have to meet other single parents.

When I belonged to Newcomers, all of the members were women and all were married or in committed live in relationships. You could ask Phil if things have changed since then.

A perusal of the school directories would suggest that there are numerous single parent families in town. Directory for my child's elementary school class this year listed a single parent for 1/4 of the kids! This is the highest percentage in the grade, but there are single parents in almost every class I perused.
