I love the South Orange pool. It's one of the town's best assets, and I'm sure a lot of people agree. Yet this year, more of the "South Orange Community Pool" letters are missing from the building; the women's bathroom/shower facility has the same torn, mildewed shower curtains on the one stall with curtains, which by the way has a busted shower hose, and the picnic tables we are required to use are disgusting -- chipped paint, bird poop, etc. I asked the guy supposedly managing the pool about all this, and he gave me an infuriating answer, in essence, the town allocates nothing to the pool and he can't even hire enough lifeguards. Oh, and "you only pay $15 per person per year." Mr. Rosner, what's the story? If the facility belongs to SO and is run by SO, shouldn't it be kept up by the village -- think of the message it sends, starting with all those missing letters. And if $15 per person doesn't cut it, wouldn't it still be a bargain to increase the fee to $18 or $20, which certainly would pay for a few shower curtains, a new shower hose, a few letters and a couple of cans of paint.....

Ral: I am passing your post on to John Gross. I can't possibly explain why some of those maintenance problems have not been taken care of. The $15.00 is a recreation fee that basically proves you live in S. Orange and allows you to use the tennis courts, basketball courts, paddle ball, and of course the pool. The money is not exclusively for the pool. It would have been totally inappropiate for the pool manager (or any village employee) to make that kind of comment or to even hint that there is not enough in the budget to hire lifeguards. The problem has always been finding enough lifeguards not paying them. |

Well, he said it. And aside from its inappropriateness, it suggested that neglect of the pool was something we SO residents have to accept. Which is obviously unacceptable. In any case, I thank you for your quick response and would like to know how I can follow up on this. |

Something has to be done about upkeep and maintenance - my son came home the other day with a bloodied up foot. The bottom floor of the training pool is very rough and broken up in spots. I noticed that the large pool has similar problems. How much of our excessive tax money actually goes toward the pool? |

Many kids have scraped up their feet this year. Mr. Rosner, you mentioned that you would pass my comments on to John Gross. Was there any response? I haven't seen any changes. Again, how do we follow up on something like this? And I'd like to echo chasm's question: How much of our tax money goes to the pool? Perhaps more of it should, or again, the $15 fee should be raised to provide basic maintenance. |

This is our 3rd year at the pool -- and I wouldn't say things are much different than in the past. Very much could use a few new shower curtains and some shower upgrades! But I would like some thoughts on is about having little girls in the men's locker room -- My son and I (he's 7) will go in to shower and change before going home. Lately, a Dad with a boy a bit older than my son and a daughter about 6/7 or so comes in, they all shower (in the nude, in the open). While I'm somewhat uncomfortable with this, my son is very uncomfortable having the girl there. (what's even stranger (to me) , is last time the Mom was waiting outside until they were done - she had not been swimming - but didn't take the girl into the women's side!) Anyway -- thoughts on this? Is having little girls in the mens locker room ok? Pete

As the mother of a daughter and a son, I can tell you it is definitely NOT okay to take a 6 or 7 year old girl into a men's bathroom or locker room. I am surprised the girl doesn't put up a fuss. I also think a girl that age is too old to be taking a shower with her father and older brother, even in their own home. I think you should say something to the dad next time you see it happening. Also, a lot of places now have family chaning rooms or bathrooms where parents can go with their opposite-sex children. Maybe this should be suggested. |

I have daughters too and even if they showered w/ their dad at home a 7 yo showering in the men's locker room is not cool. Not only is it inappropriate for her to see other men at her age, the men there would most definitely feel uncomfortable, like Pete said. What if one of the men was the father of a friend? |

Thanks -- just making sure that my gut feeling is right. It's just not ok for her to be in the locker room with other men/boys. Pete |
