This morning I think I saw a coyote in the backyard. Very mangy looking. Too big for a fox, but with same features of long tail and narrow snout. Ran hunched over like a coyote. Was tan and brown. Looked like it had lost hair on its haunches and bits of the tail (perhaps rabid). |

Dave, now THAT is funny! Seriously, there have been reports of coyotes in the reservation which I tend to believe. New, where do you live? Near the Res? For now coyotes, next year wolves!!!! |

I do live a couple blocks from the res. Coyote was running through my yard in the direction of it. All I ask is that Cujo doesn't show up in my yard next... |

If they eat deer and rabbits, I'm all for them. Here's more... get this: you're supposed to "harass or chase coyotes" -- have fun! http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/areas/stlouis/wildlife/coyote.htm |

Coyotes have been known to eat pet cats and small dogs. Those who think coyotes might be in their area should never let cats or small dogs outside. Coyote loss of habitat has pushed them here out of need. Let's not kill the coyotes; let's protect our small pets by keeping them inside. |

Not to mention small children every once and awhile........ I believe they have to hunt as a pack to bring down a reasonably healthy adult deer. However, they may pick off a fawn or two or three. Maybe this is why there were fewer deer in the Res last year? Hmmm, wonder what Harpo thinks about that?

It could have been a fox, too, no? I'm pretty sure I saw a fox recently in Edison. Tom Reingold |

Nope. Not a fox. I did, however, see a fox near the reservation one time. They are much smaller than what I saw in the backyard. |

Last week I was lucky enough to encounter foxes on two different occasions. The first was a red fox that I saw in the quarry about a half hour before sunset. I was with my son and our dog. My son saw it but the dog never did. The second sighting was in the reservation on Cherry Lane near South Orange Ave. This was also a red fox seen around dusk. Last year in my neighborhood near the quarry we had several grey fox sightings due to them feeding on a deer carcass had been left lying by the side of the road for a number of days. I am going to miss the neighborhood foxes.
