We just moved here, and our pediatrician in Hoboken is just too far now. Any good recommendations? Our baby is only six weeks old, so we need to make quite a few visits. |

Dr. Gruenwald on Millburn Ave is wonderful. Our son has been with him for almost 3 years and we love him more each time we visit. His partners COmmandatore and Sterio are also excellent although Sterio tends to be a bit gruff. Good luck! |

We love that practice too. Our primary is Dr. Commandatore. Sterio is reserved more than gruff and my kids like her fine. |

We also have been very happy with the practice. Greunwald is extremely knowledgable. I find Sterio a bit "gruff" on the phone but surprisingly good with the kids in person! |

We love Drs Gruenwald & Commandatore too. We usually see Dr. C on routine visits. My son looks forward to going. The staff is wonderful, too. The nurses are always willing to answer questions and I've never had trouble getting a referral when it was needed. I refuse to see Dr. Sterio unless on of my kids is very sick and she's the only one in because of her condecending attitude towards me on several occasions (She actually told me I would never be able to breastfeed my son because he was too big - at only 2 days old!) |

Dr. Cotler on Millburn Ave. Terrific guy and has walk in hours from 7-9 AM during the school year. |

We have been very pleased with Boodish, Mangru & Azaro at 159 Millburn Ave 973/912-0155. They each care tremendously about how our child is doing. Because our child had juvenile jaundice the first time we met them, each member of the practice over a holiday weekend. The office staff have also been nice and have always scheduled us in or had a doctor return our new parent concerns/questions. |

We have been with Dr. Gruenwald for all three of our children (who now range from 9 to 17). We'd recommend him without reservation. Although our satisfaction with Dr. Gruenwald meant that we never went to Don Cotler, it's no reflection on his practice. My sense of him is that he is a grounded, caring physician who puts kids first. |

FYI Dr. Sterio competently diagonosed my son when he woke up one day last month unable to walk and in pain. In all my years I have never heard of toxic synovitis but she was on the mark. She asked me to call her in 2 days with an update. My son chose to write her a note instead saying "My leg is all better." Two days later, Dr. Sterio left a sweet message on our answering machine for my son saying that she was happy to get his note and so glad that he was feeling better. By the way, toxic synovitis is a transient inflammation of the hip area which is usually preceded by an upper respiratory infection and seems to affect boys from the ages of 3 through 10.

We also have been very happy with Drs. Boodish, Mangru and Azzaro. They diagnosed my infant son's allergy to milk products quickly and are always extremely pleasant to deal with. They never make us wait long to see a doctor and are five minutes away at 159 Millburn Avenue. |

Another vote for Boodish, Mangru & Azaro. Whenever I needed an emergency appointment [a possible ear infection when I picked up a child from daycare] they ALWAYS saw me right away. Dr. Boodish was actually my pediatrician when my family moved to Maplewood years ago. He has 2 female associates who are great. |

Depends on what you are looking for. Dr. Schlacter in Essex Fells is very good. However, if you are looking for someone who doesn't have over 20 years experience, will readily prescribe antibiotics, thinks it is OK to not breatfeed, and doesn't care if there is mercury in your kid's vaccines, then don't go to Dr. Schlacter. |

Tourne, What is THAT supposed to mean? Your ped is the ONLY one who is experienced, caring, and knowledgable? That's the most ridiculous statement I have ever seen on a doctor-recommendation thread.

I, for one, prefer a doctor who: *Got his medical degree online in the past six months *Recommends whiskey instead of breast milk, *Suggest calming a crying infant by breathing cigarette smoke in its face, *Advises against the use of car seats (or seatbelts), *Recommends teaching kids to swim by throwing them off the dock, and *Gives shots for fun. I can't give you my doctor's name, though--he's so popular, he isn't taking any more patients. |

Dr. Schlacter is an excellent ped. and I do agree with tourne - who you chose does depend on what you are looking for in a Dr. (much like the OB/GYN thread). Dr. S is very pro-breastfeeding (no samples of formula or other material from formula companies to be found in his office), he works with parents who chose to not to vaccinate or selectively vac., is comfortable with co-sleeping and he is extremely mellow and laid back. There are many highly qualified Dr's that won't be as friendly to some of those parenting choices. If some or any of those issues are important to you, then Dr. S. would be a great Dr. to look into. |

Another strong endorsement for Dr. Cotler. He has always made excellent diagnoses and is the kindest, most patient doctor I have ever encountered. His manner with my son and daughter (both pre-schoolers, who have seen him for three years) is nothing less than superb -- they actually look forward to our doctor visits. His staff is knowledgeable and polite and we've never had a problem getting in to see him when necessary. |
