It's a sunny Saturday/Sunday morning - where can my husband join in with a bike group or a round of golf - which municipal course is best?

Thanks

Francis Byrne is a decent course. You can sometimes walk on but you'll need to go to the county office in Newark with two proofs of residence and picture ID to get a pass to get 1/2 price rounds and the right to book tee times.

Walking on is pretty tough on the weekends at Byrne...and the rounds are typically over 5 hours. If you just want to get out and play a round of golf, I'd recommend Weequahic Park, in Newark. Is it a nice course...not particularly. Nope, not at all. But you can actually get out and play without too much delay, and still have time to ride your bikes.

You can also walk on to East Orange Golf Club in Short Hills (it's on Parsonage Hill Road). Mornings are reserved for members but you can walk on pretty quickly after noon. Not a great course, but good enough.

Actually, there was once a sport called bicycle polo. I've seen the antique bikes from that era. They had a 20 inch front wheel and a 16 inch rear wheel, so it was pretty odd looking.

Mummite, I just moved into Maplewood and I might like taking a bike ride with your husband. I think I'm what they'd call a "B" rider, although I can slow down to a "C" pace happily. I can't play golf, however.

WHO SAID BICYCLE POLO?

There still is bicycle polo, it's very popular in Portland among messengers. www.axlesofevil.org

South Orange/Maplewood bicycle polo league! I've been trying to find people who knew about bike polo and get them to play since I was a messenger in the city.

I'm with Tom R -- also new to Maplewood and willing to ride w/your husband or others ... on roads or trails ...

Speaking of antique bikes, if you're ever in the Buffalo area, you should visit http://www.pedalinghistory.com/ It has a fantastic collection, and they're looking for a larger building, so don't be put off by the cramped appearance.

Weeqhauic in Newark is the closest, and the easiest to get on without a tee time.
R on Chancellor all the way to the end (4-5 mis?),
R on Elizabeth, then first left into the park. The Golf course entrance is just over the bridge on the right.
Sunday afternoon you (incredibly) rarely wait long, esp. if you're a single.
If you have weekdays free at all, it's wide open.
They have a twilight rate in the Summer (after 5:30) and you can easily get in 9 before Sunset.

The golf i.d. card is a must if you play more than two rounds/year, it's $40 and makes greens fees $18 instead of $36 on weekends, 1/2 price also on weekday ($14.50). Cart extra. Essex Cty. courses do not have pull carts.

drewdix, does Weeqhauic take the golf i.d. card too or were you just referring to Francis Byrne?

Can anyone tell me where in Newark one gets the county i.d. card?

if you get the essex county card you will be able to play francis byrne, weequahic and hendricks field.

Thanks for such detailed and friendly responses. We will be in Maplewood from mid September and my husband will definitely be in touch.
