As a Maplewood newbie, where can I get a decent haircut around $10? |

I am afraid this would be a violation of the Town Code. If you proceed a hefty fine will be levied. Additionally, the Hair Standards Board will perform a hairstyle review to determine whether jail time or community service is warranted. |

you can get a haircut for $10 when you can find an independently wealthy licensed hairdresser who has nothing better to do with his time or from an equally talented licensed hairdresser whom you might find living in a cardboard box. |

Larry's on Maplewood Avenue. $12.00. I've had both Larry and Maria cut my hair and have been pleased over the last nine years. TomR. |

I learned how to cut my husband's hair (which is quite unruly and very curly), so he spends 0$ for a very good haircut. All that it needed is a comb, a good pair of scissors, and possibly an electric trimmer for the neck area. If you have a significant other or friend who is willing to be coached by you on how you like your hair cut, then you, too, could get free haircuts. Good luck!

I think Supercuts in Short Hills (on Morris Ave., before Kings) charges $12. |

I go to Larry's as well. Bernie or Karin, both of them do a fine job (though I think Bernie is a little better). It's a nice old-timey looking plain old barber shop, no pretense or annoying dance music. |

Talk about old-timey, try the guy on Baker St. That guy is over 80 and still going strong. Decent cut too. |

Walking north on Nassau St a block or 2 past Fulton, down the steps at the A train entrance is a guy who cuts for $6.00! I have been several times, and no compliants. Six bucks. |

Luigi's at Vauxhall and Barnett in Union, a couple of hundred yards from Maplewood is $12. For two dollars more than the reservation price you stated, you get great entertainment from three generations of guys with progressively reduced Italian accents. Very funny guys. It's no frou-frou place: it's got the combs in the funny blue liquid, the scent of bay rum in the air and sports magazines on the table. Robert Little

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'll have to see which works for me. Obviously we all have our favorites and budgets. I'll keep you posted where I get one. As for now, being so busy this weekend, I'll be getting mine in Manhattan during my lunch hour. I'm getting tired of waking up to see my hair resembling Kramer's. |

I have to return to 1985 to remember a time when I had enough hair to wake up looking like Kramer. Unfortunately, at the time, Kramer had not been invented yet, so I thought I was waking up looking like Professor Irwin Corey. |

I used to look like Kramer, too, although my hair didn't go up, it went out in all directions. I'm Jewish, but I have found that the best barbers for my hair are Hispanic. Maybe I'll take a ride into one of the local Hispanic neighborhoods and try someone out. My last barber, in Edison, a Dominican man who barely speaks a word of English, takes tremendous pride in his work, sweating every possible detail. After every haircut he does for me, he always says, "Beautiful, every time" in his heavy accent. When someone takes that kind of pride in his work, it's very heartening, no matter what type of work it is. Tom Reingold

I know it's time when I look in the mirror and see Keith Richards' hair. |
