My husband and I have been searching for a home in Maplewood and have heard that there is a listing of homes somewhere (not a realtor's webside), is this true? The listings on this site all seem outdated. Thanks. |

You can look at www.realtor.com and www.gsmls.com. Both sites have pictures and other relevant information, but usually not addresses. |

gsmls.com is the site the realtors use. the listings are the most up to date - and as stated, usually no addresses |

why not use a realtor? they will preview the houses for you and separate the wheat from the chaff. costs you nothing. i know a hard worker- erin smith at weichert in short hills. she specializes in maplewood, and is great about talking you out of houses that aren't a great fit. tells you to wait and not panic, |

--Maplewood is a very nice little town-- I couldn't agree more :-) We've been here a few weeks and it's just amazing to me. We take the kids into town for some pizza and there are people just strolling the sidewalk looking in windows with their ice cream cones and little league games in the park. I feel like I'm in a picture book tourist town on vacation. I love it :-) We found an ERA/Burghdorff on the web at http://www.era.com/states/NJ/31961.html made a call and on our first visit out here, bought the house :-)

We bought that fast too, a few years ago. At the time all I could think was that I often spent more time considering a new pair of shoes. But it felt right. It was right and life is good. Welcome both (and all newbies). |

We bought our house on the first time out, too, in August 2001. We wondered all the way to closing whether we were crazy for doing so. Good to no were not the only nut-jobs! P.S. We found our house on realtor.com. |

Well even though it wasn't our first time out, it was the first time a house was shown to us in Maplewood. All the others were in Montclair and South Orange. It definitely is good to read those notes. Thank you all, I feel much better about my decision. With people like us moving in, we'll work with the current Maplewoodonians to make this the greatest town in NJ. |

We were at a realtor's office the first weekend we saw Maplewood. It took a couple of weeks or so, but after being outbid 1x, we found our home and have been here happily for the past month. bklyntonj - We too are here to make this town even greater and will contribute anyway we can to ensure that it stays that way !!!!

And I thought we were the only mad ones buying first time out! Having done internet research we flew in on a Sunday night having never been to NJ before and had bought the house in Maplewood by the Tuesday night! I hope the train commute lives up to the timetable! We also looked at Montclair but preferred the houses and friendliness of MW. I must thank the posting members on this board for answering some questions quickly, we needed fast responses. We also used ERA Burgdorrf, ask for Kathy. Once we'd signed she took my "The Sopranos" fan husband out to see the big house in their credits too - what a star! |

Hey, that's good to hear. Welcome to Maplewood. That's a really quick one, Mummite. We looked for almost year and after 5 or 6 outbids (most in Montclair) we bought a great house in Maplewood. It does have a more friendly and "village" feel then Montclair and I think the train schedule is better. |

We also bought our house the first day out here, back in April of 2000. We'd been looking for several months in Bergen County and Westchester (lived in Bklyn at the time), and a friend from work kept saying, "Maplewood South Orange, Maplewood South Orange." Came out here one day with my daughter, mostly to shut her up. We looked at six houses with a realtor, while I got used to the idea that lovely architecture and beautiful neighorhoods could be mine for less than the millions I was hearing in Dobbs Ferry. When we got to the sixth house, I called Mr. G. and said "Get the other kid and drive out here, because we're going to buy this house." Made a bid the same night, then a slightly higher second bid, and here we are. No regrets, even though we'd never done anything that fast in our lives! |

We looked at 87 houses around Westfield/Cranford/Scotch Plains area over a 4 months period. Then we bought the very first house we saw in Maplewood via NYT classfied. I still feel guilty about our realtor in Westfield who patiently showed us all those houses...then lost out his commission to the lucky Maplewood Burgdorf agent who just happened to answer the phone when we called about our house. |

Xavier67.. We too looked with a Burgdorf Realtor, and several others (in S.O., W.O., and Mplwd.), and went to open houses from the ads in the Sunday papers on our own, from April til Sept in 1998. We must have seen 150 houses, and bid on three b4 we got Casa Elmwood... The one we finally bought was from an ad in the Star Ledger, placed by a Weichert Realtor. After seeing it, and loving it, we gave our offer. About 2 hours later, the Burgdorf guy called to show us the house we were going to buy, and had been thru already. |

That's horrible! What was Burgdorf agent's reaction when he found out he's going to get zilch for his efforts? |

During our househunting process, we always looked at houses through one of our two our realtors -- we had one working with us in Morris County, and another working with us in Essex county -- regardless of who "found" the house, us or them. In fact, I spotted the house we eventually bought through an ad in the paper while our Essex agent was on vacation in Chicago; I called and left her a message about the ad, and within hours she had arranged (via phone) for the listing agent to show us the house in her absence. I thought that was proper etiquette, not only to reward your agent for all the time and effort they've put in to your house search, but also to make sure you have someone who's truly on your side during the bidding and long closing process. |

He was dissapointed, but understood someone beat him to it. I bet it happens all the time in their line of work... He did alot of work showing us around town, and the Realtor who got the big fat commission check was only with us for a total of 1/2 hour.... |
