Hi - my mother-in-law is visiting us for the first time from Bangladesh. she speaks no english and is staying with us for a couple of months. she has noone to talk to all day until my husband gets home (usually late) we have only lived in the area a little over one year and dont know any other bengali families. are there any bengali speaking people in the maplewood south orange area looking for someone to speak bengali (bangla) with? and/or want to get to know other bengali neighbors? i hope this doesn't sound weird, it almost sounds like a personals ad - but it isn't. mother-in-law is not looking for anything romantic at all, and we just wouldn't mind knowing some other bengali (or half bengali) families in the area. (my email address: mallorymiah@aol.com)

thanks

Mallory: I know there are a number of Bengali staff at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark but I don't know any of them personally. Universities tend to attract people from all over the world so there may be a similar phenomenon at Seton Hall (which has a large Asian studies program.) You might try contacting someone at those sites. Student affairs? Hmmm. Anyway, I'll ask around a bit at work. Meanwhile, can you hook her up on the 'net? Just for conversation?

Mallory:

Re: Your return of my e-mail

I hope you will call my husband's friend. He works during the week so calling this weekend would be better. He told my husband that he is looking forward to speaking with someone from home and getting the latest news.

He lives in Union (which as you know is a town immediately adjacent to Maplewood). It is my understanding that there is a large Indian population there, though I don't know how many of them are Bengali-speaking.

Mallory:

Did you have any luck locating bengali-speakers who could converse with your mother-in-law?
