I've had AOL dialup service for about 6 years. It is very slow, but I have not been motivated to explore cable connections.
Yesterday I got a letter from AOL saying I could now switch to broadband. Haven't got a clue what it is all about!
Will I be happier? Will I be poorer?

If you're going to go broadband, I'd suggest Comcast High Speed Internet rather than AO-Hell.

Will you be happier? Depends on how much you use the Internet and what you use it for. Your connection will be MUCH faster and you won't be tying up your phone line. So if you do a lot of downloading, spend a lot of time online or (like me) like to keep your e-mail software running all day, broadband is the way to go.

Will you be poorer? Yes. Broadband will cost around twice as much as a dial-up account, and I'd guess that AO-Hell will be more expensive than Comcast, and with AO-Hell you will continue to be inundated with junk mail and ads.
