After three years in Maplewood, I have finally passed my written test and am ready to begin taking driving lessons. Any recommendations of a teacher or school for a somewhat nervous, late-to-learn driver?

I used Easy Method Driving School several years ago for stick shift lessons. My instructor was very patient.

Definitely DO NOT go with Silbernagel. He is arrogant and abusive, and quits on you if you require more time then average to get comfortable with driving.

Our experience with Silbernagel has been very good, and the same applies to all of the many people who referred us to him. He may not be socially smooth, but he teaches well.

Dear Starr, metaphor and egreenfi:
Thank you for your responses, which are much appreciated. A few questions, though: is Silbernagel a driving instructor at the Easy Method school? The administrator at Easy Method with whom I spoke recommended someone named "Bob," whom she said had been teaching in our area for 30 years. Is this the same Silbernagel? Does Silbernagel have a son who also teaches? I need a teacher who is going to be patient with someone who might be a bit nervous, at times (me), as I have delayed learning to drive for about 25 years!

Silbernagel is the name of the company listed in the phone book, and on his vehicle when he pulls up. I don't believe anyone else works with him. Also from what I hear his driving lessons involve his commentary of people as you are driving past the front of that individuals house. Presumably if you then become one of the unfortunate ones with whom he loses patience and drops, your house would then get added to his tour.

Silbernagel has it's own driving school. It is not associated with the Easy Method school.

My comment on Silbernagel was addressed to those who begin to drive later in life and whose anxiety level is higher. He is not the right teacher for us.

He is a patient, understanding wonderful driving
instructor. Plus he lives here in Maplewood..I highly recommend.

Thanks, r2boy, for your tip. I've finally started my lessons with the Easy Method Driving School (Bob Ofner), which was recommended in an earlier post on this thread. Thus far, all is going well, and Bob has been patient and easygoing. But, it's always good to have a back up.
