I need advice to get 2 people back from the Brewster North station in NY to Newark NJ on Sunday afternoon. They can take the Harlem line in to Grand Central, then what? These are NOT savvy travelers/commuters (nor am I but/and I will not be with them.) I'm thinking of putting them in a cab at GCT to go over to the West Side. Then? PATH? or what? Looking for minimum hassle but a reasonable budget. Thanks.

Taxi to NY Penn Station, then almost any NJT train (except on Montclair or Morris & Essex lines) to Newark Penn; the fair should only be two or three dollars, would be my guess.

Thanks, amandacat, that sounds do-able. I've been able to pull schedules from the 'net and yes, the fare is very reasonable, $3 for adult $1.50 for child.

I was also trying to find a way to connect them from the Metro North Harlem Line to an Amtrak line but it looks impossible. Entirely different rail systems. We have an interesting transit system in these here United States. I think the phrase "You can't get there from here" was written with the railways in mind.

The other alternative is the shuttle to 7th ave and then the 1, 2 or 3 to Penn. If they are timid travlers the cab is probably a better bet. NJT certainly better than Path in terms of speed and comfort.

Where in Newark are they going? Montclair and Morris/Essex trains stop at Newark BROAD STREET while Trenton and Jersey Coastline trains stop at Newark PENN STATION. Therefore, the final destination should be a consideration in planning the best route.

PATH ($1.50 per person each way) is another convenient way to get to Newark Penn Station. The closest PATH station to Grand Central Station is at 6th Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) and 32nd Street.

Subway fare for two people will be $4. The cab will probably be about the same, maybe another buck with tip. They just have to act like they know where they are just in case the cabbie has any ideas about getting them to Penn Station via the Bronx.

Final destination is University Hospital.

Cheapest is not the ultimate concern. Reasonable cost and manageable for neophytes is. We have a couple of volunteers who are riding a bus to Carmel NY as chaperones for a busload of kids going to sleepaway camp for a week. After they get the kids up there they need to get back to the starting point, where their cars are parked.

Any tips for telling them how to negotiate NY Penn Station, which can be very confusing for first timers? (I travel through there about once a year, usually in the company of people who know what they're doing.)

Thanks again.

Have them tell the cabbie to take them to the 7th Avenue entrance of Penn Station, by the Madison Square Garden marquee. Tell them to go down the stairs, and almost immediately to the left will be the (new and beautiful) New Jersey Transit area. They can buy tickets and catch their train right there, without having to go into the intimidating main room of Penn Station.

I gave these directions to out-of-town friends last fall, and it went very smoothly.

Thanks, Mooewe! That was exactly what I needed to complete the directions!
