Picking up the new puppy in a couple of weeks. What would one expect in this area for vet checkups, shots, etc. I'm also torn b/w Dr. Stack, Summit Cat and Dog and Dr. Malpamati. Sounds like they are all good?

We've used Summit Dog & Cat Hospital and are very happy with the care and the cost.

I really like Dr. Malampati and we go to him for regular vet care. But we go to Summit Dog & Cat for boarding. Theirs are the only nice boarding facilities in the area.

We go to Madison Vet Hospital for our vet & boarding. It's a little further than the others you mentioned, but we like it so much that we won't leave!

For boarding, they have internet cameras so you can log on while your away & see your dog in the run. They also have cat "suites" so that you can keep your multiple cats together to ease anxiety. (Or if you only own one cat that is just spoiled!)

The finest boarding facility in the area, in my opinion, is Preferred Pet Care in West Orange. They put the dogs in a play area (doggy day care) all day and they get their own room at night - no cages. They are out dog walkers, too, and I would go with nobody else in the world when it comes to my dog.

Totally agree with comments on Preferred Pet Care. Before we found them, my family would spend our vacations worrying about our Basset Hound. Unfortunately she has left us but do yourself a favor, board your animal with them, it's like sending your dog to camp, not jail. Our dog was old and not always in the mood for playing , so they let her sit up front in the office and snooze like she always did at home. They really care about animals at this place.

I might also add that it would be worth your while to look into PetsHealthPlan.com. We got full coverage for our puppy, and even though the policy is rather expensive, it paid for itself three-fold for the pups first year. Between all shots and puppy requirements, and the cost of neutering, we saved about $500 after the cost of coverage. Follow the link below, and click on POLICIES.

health coverage

After the dogs first year, we converted the "all inculsive" policy (Choice) to one that covers "injury and illness" (Basic), also terrific coverage at about $180 per year. After hearing what costs were incurred when a pet needed medical attention, it is a very beneficial way to go.

PS: We use Dr. Sepulveda at Millburn Animal Hospital, corner of Ridgewood and Millburn.

Thank you all for your notes. Could you all please tell me what costs are associated with your visits? For instance, how much would shots be for a puppy? How much is a routine visit? How much for an emergency?
Thank you.
