My AP style guide is too old to cover this: should it be "web site" or "website"? Would prefer AP style recommendation, if anyone has current copy. |

Don't have the new AP guide, but the brand-new Websters 11th Collegiate goes with Web site (cap the W), (webmaster, webcam, etc. remain closed and lowercase), as does the publication where I work. Chicago 15th also prefers Web site. |

The Associated Press Style Guide says it's "Web site," with a capital W. (FWIW, the folks at Microsoft say the same in their own style guide.) |

While we're at it, I go along with the proposal I read somewhere (where?) respectable that says we should spell it "internet" with a lower case 'i'. It's not a company, after all. Pass the word on! No capital 'I'! Therefore, I recommend "web site" with a lower case 'w'. Tom Reingold

The correct spelling is "Time sink". |

Glad to see you got your answer. Although I have to add... I edit documents and websites with these terms in them all day long, and i can honestly say that unless someone is forcing you to abide by Microsoft, AP, or Chicago, just avoid the headaches and do what you like, as long as you're consistent with yourself/your group. My personal preference: website (unless at the beginning of a sentence) and Internet. There's no logic, but i don't think any of the guides have any either. |

Tom: Aren't the names of all geographic locations considered to be proper nouns and therefore written with an initial cap? Isn't the Internet a place? |

Someone recently told me with (apparent) authority that the terms Web and Internet should always be capitalized. I had been using website and Internet previously, consistent with Papayagirl. I don't have a style guide or other authority to back this up, however. |

Joan, I consider the internet to be closer to a thing, such as the phone service, which I don't capitalize either. Nor do I capitalize the road system. Neither of these is a proper noun. Tom Reingold

Webster's Collegiate 11th goes with e-mail; so does Chicago 15th. |
