I'm trying to facilitate a move for my aging mother from Florida to New Jersey. (I know, retirees usually move south, but Mom misses the change of seasons!) As I seek out affordable housing options, Trenton keeps coming up.

I've never been there, so can anyone give me an idea of what it's like? I see that their crime rates are comparable to Newark, but are there areas that are generally safer than others? What parts of the city should I look for...or avoid?

Thanks for your help.

Sgt,

Consider the burbs just outside of Trenton. Hamilton, Robbinsville or Lawrence.

I used to work for one of the Trenton daily newspapers and I was mugged in broad daylight outside my office on Perry Street. That area has a lot of crack houses and crime. Chambersburg is an Italian neighborhood with good restaurants and I think is pretty safe but also quite prejudiced against people of color. Plainsboro is a suburb which used to have affordable condos (formerly farmland) but your mother would have to be able to drive, nothing is within walking distance.

Also, look in Pennington. Are you looking for her to live independently? I would agree that she absolutely needs to drive in the areas surrounding Trenton but in Chambersburg (the Italian section), she might be OK with walking.
