I'm trying to facilitate a move for my aging mother from Florida to New Jersey. (I know, retirees usually move south, but Mom misses the change of seasons!) As I seek out affordable housing options, Trenton keeps coming up. I've never been there, so can anyone give me an idea of what it's like? I see that their crime rates are comparable to Newark, but are there areas that are generally safer than others? What parts of the city should I look for...or avoid? Thanks for your help.

Sgt, Consider the burbs just outside of Trenton. Hamilton, Robbinsville or Lawrence. |

I used to work for one of the Trenton daily newspapers and I was mugged in broad daylight outside my office on Perry Street. That area has a lot of crack houses and crime. Chambersburg is an Italian neighborhood with good restaurants and I think is pretty safe but also quite prejudiced against people of color. Plainsboro is a suburb which used to have affordable condos (formerly farmland) but your mother would have to be able to drive, nothing is within walking distance. |

Also, look in Pennington. Are you looking for her to live independently? I would agree that she absolutely needs to drive in the areas surrounding Trenton but in Chambersburg (the Italian section), she might be OK with walking. |
