I'm seriously considering getting Verizon DSL internet service and getting rid of AOL. The way I see it, it would be cheaper, by about $10/month, than getting a 2nd line, and the features look to be comparable to what we get on AOL. It looks good on paper, but I'm curious to know if anyone has had any experience with this and could pass along their comments about it. Thank you! |

Verizon seems to be getting some "clue" and their service seems better than ever. Also, we got a great rate, since we were moving in. For choosing their local service, they gave us DSL for only $30 a month. With that being cheaper than cable modem service, we had to try it. So far, so good. But be sure you get a router/firewall box for yourself. Since DSL (and cable modem) is always on, it's much too easy for the hackers to get into your computer. Plus, once you have a router/firewall, you can share more than one system on the line without a noticeable drop in speed. If you won't need wireless, I recommend the Linksys BEFSR41, which is probably far less than $70 now. Tom Reingold

I have Verizon DSL. This weekend I couldn’t get on the internet so I called Customer service. They answered quickly, knew my location (Caller ID?), told me they had been working on it for an hour and they were doing everything they can. They called me back 10 minutes later to say it was fixed. I was impressed. |

I concur with the rest of the opinions about Verizon's customer service. Among the computer troubleshooting stuff that I do around the neighborhood, I install home networking. Several of my customers have Verizon DSL. At various times, I have had to call Verizon to resolve logon issues, and their customer service always answers quickly and gives correct and courteous answers to my questions. I hope that they give Comcast a good run for their money. (I will never forgive Comcast for keeping me off the Internet for about a month last XMas while they went through their transition from AtHome). Marc www.millburnweb.com

I am shocked and awed that people still have aol when I hear that it's more than DSL, 1/8 the speed, and you have to have and pay for a second line. It just doesn't makes sense at all. I guess the company is just banking on the fact that these people don't have a clue about the internet and computers. These have to be the same masses of people who choose to wait in line at toll booths rather than get e-z-pass, and possibly the ones who elected George Bush. |

Verizon is easy to set up. However, their speed is pitaful compared to Earthlink. Get Earthlink instead. |

Re: AOL > I guess the company is just banking on the fact that these people don't have a clue about the internet and computers. People are starting to wake up. In this past earnings report, AOL/Time Warner reported a drop of almost 900,000 from their subscriber ranks. They are also being investigated for overstating their subscriber base. However, from what I hear, they are working feverishly on a broadband solution of their own. Marc www.millburnweb.com

Hope you have better luck than I did. I ordered the service back in June and STILL don't have service. They claim there was never a record of my order, had me cancel the order and place a new one. If they screw this up, too, I'll be going elsewhere - but where? |

There are quite a few folks on this board who are big fans of speakeasy dsl. (see www.speakeasy.net) As a result of those recommendations, that's the dsl we chose and haven't regretted it. Probably a bit more expensive than Verizon, however. |
