What's up with the kid practicing his cello in the S.Orange train station? I love the idea of classical music in the station, but this is really weird. He sounds pretty bad (obviously just practicing versus playing full pieces), yet he has a hat in front of him for commuters' money.

Huh. I thought he was pretty good. He's played some full pieces over the past few weeks. Maybe he's practicing for the N/R platform at Times Sq.

Regardless, it's live and fun.

I don't mean to sound harsh. Just thought it was strange to practice there (I walked by as he appeared to be practicing a scale). If he's playing pieces then that is great - I am a big fan of live music and the accoustics in the train station are good for that.

I thought it was kind of strange as well, but if he lives in an apartment building (which is a possibility) or is driving his parents crazy practicing - why not practice in the train station? Also, there is no sign for donations, so it someone feels like dropping some money in the case all the better! I think it is a pretty smart idea....

I was headed into the city the other afternoon and overheard him talking to someone that he was with and said that South Orange was a bad station to make any money in and was only pulling in about $5.00/hr. He didn't sound too happy and mentioned that he might try Short Hills. He also was talking about experimenting with leaving dollars vs. change in his case and said that if there was change, people would put more change instead of leaving dollars.

If he has a whole day, maybe he should purchase a ticket to NYC and play in the subway - I think that there is a lot more traffic and he would probably make more money.

Kevin -

Thanks for the email! I feel kind of foolish thinking he was just there to practice. He doesn't play very well - I can't see him making too much if that is his goal!

The competition for busking spots in the city is cutthroat. There was a good Tunnel Vision article about it in the Times approx. 2 months ago. Better for the kid to start out here.
