I'm a recent transplant from Brooklyn and I'm looking to continue my career as a professional-amateur-after-work-weekend-warrior softball player :-) Are there any softball leagues in Maplewood that play in town or over at Maplecrest Park??? Thanks, M ________________ Michael Arnold arnomation@verizon.net

Mike, I asked that same question a few years back when I first moved here and was told that there was a league that played at DeHart park and that the rec department would have info. I never took it any further. However, with the new pub soon to be opening in the village it would be a perfect time to see if anyone is interested in a little Sunday morning softball down in Memorial park. Quick game then walk to the village for some refreshments then walk home. Can't beat it with a big stick. Anyone else interested? |

Cool, and the Pub seems like it would be the perfect place for recruits :-) I suppose we could ask online here or put up a flyer or two around town. I think we should also contact the parks department (if there is one) about permits etc. I'd also like to find out who to contact as far as the parks are concerned because recently, a section of the outfield fence on the little league diamond here in Maplecrest Park was damaged possibly by a maintainence truck (hopefully not vandals) and I'd like to see it fixed. Hopefully, we can get enough people interested to form a few teams :-)

Arnomation, The Little League fence was damaged by a section of a tree that fell last Saturday afternoon. Luckily most of the several thousand pound object fell on the other side of the fence. |

Who is we? Is it open to the public? I'd be interested in playing once my work league is over. |

You can contact the Recreation Department at 973-763-4202. They're open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. They'll be able to answer your questions.

Yep, just show up with your glove, we (just a group of guys like you) have a permit for the field behind the rec house. We pick the teams based on who is there and we play ball. It's good pick up softball. And curious onlooker, it's not part of Maplewood Rec, Hank Zona put this together and got the permit from the rec dept |

So anyone who has read this thread understands whats going on and knows what to expect if they show up at Memorial Field, please read this. We do play on Monday nights in July and August in Memorial Park. Its the first year we've been doing it there. It is not a Rec Department sponsored or organized event...I went to the Rec Department to get a permit for the field to make sure it was available and to make sure we'd have weekly access to it. If anyone wants to use a field, Id suggest going the same route...and be willing to follow up regularly/persist with the Rec Department. Permits are free. The Monday night group is a group that wants to play softball competitively and for fun without the softball league mentality (with all due respect to softball league regulars, but you all know what Im refering to on the negative side). We show up 600-615, everyone gets to take some batting practice and once we get enough to field two teams, we start to play until dark (which is earlier with each passing week). **Here is my caveat/disclaimer though: I have a notification list (mostly by email) of over 40 people by now. We do not get that sort of turn-out weekly, but we've fielded two teams every week nonetheless. Noone has not been welcome to play, but if anyone new wants to play, feel free to come along, but at this juncture, in all fairness, priority goes to anyone who has been playing and has already been on the list.** Its a wide-ranging group that just sort of formed itself with no advertisement and a little word of mouth (everyone knows at least someone else who invited them). In fact, although the permit is in my name, I dont know everyone personally who is on the list. One thing that has been consistent is that its been alot of fun for those who play. Everyone tries hard to do their best but noone loses their marbles either...no weasels, jerks or headcases are welcome. If the "experiment" continues to go well through August, I may look to see if we can expand it a bit next year to two fields a night or a couple of nights, subject to interest and field availability. Or by all means, someone else get another game going. |

I used to be good, I used to slide in shorts and dive all over the place. Then something happened. I turned 35. I played SS all my life and have recently come to the conclusion that I have the range of a potted plant. As I've come to terms with my advancing age and declining skill set, I've turned to a slower brand of softball. Preferably one where I won't hurt myself. My work league can be described as moderate to bad. Typically the teams with the youngest players do well. I'm content to play 2B and let the kids have all the fun. As I've said I'd love to play when my work league lets out in about two weeks. We'll see. Thanks for the info. |
