anyone here have any guidelines on profanity usage by their teens other than, "Don't, or at least act like you don't"? I know one parent who lets her daughter use whatever language she likes around whoever, and that doesn't sit right with me. But I also think it's pretty dumb to pretend that this part of growing up does not take place. In fact, it is appropriate to learn how to use strong language (if you choose to use it) in the right way - such as not in front of adults, not at school or work, etc. anyone openly let their kids curse? or is it all behind the parents' backs? |

I have 16 year old twin girls and they wouldn't say S**T if they had a mouthful. They never heard cursing around the house, therefore, they don't. I'm not certain what they say or do while at school or out, but I'd bet my life they act the same as when they're home. |

1-2 Many, Have you seen South Park, the movie? That should give you some very useful insight about profanity among children.

dude. I own and love South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. I have no illusions about children and profanity. My only query is, what guidelines do other parents try to give their kids? I told mine, I am sure you and/or some of your friends cuss, it's something people do, but with some guidelines in mind. For kids, those guidelines are don't do it at school, in front of adults, teachers, old people, etc. I was just wondering if other parents had other approaches, like my one acquaintance who allows her daughter to say whatever she likes IN FRONT OF WHOEVER SHE LIKES, which I find to be bad manners. Another friend of my daughters seems to say every curse word, often saying "whore" (not technically a curse word, but kind of nasty) many times in a conversation without a second thought - again, despite who is present. clearly this kid is in the habit of saying whatever, whenever, which I don't want my own kid to do. any suggestions? |
