My office has five computers, two printers, an external HD for backups, a UPS to keep me working when power fails, a scanner, a desk lamp, USB cables for digital camera and external speakers, an A/C, a multi-purpose fax/copier thingy, two phones, an ethernet hub, a dsl router, a cell phone recharger, and a music thingy that sends tunes to the downstairs stereo (my toothbrush is battery operated). So I now have a viper nest of wires under the desk. It takes me an hour to unplug one thing. Has anyone developed a solution other than "go wireless" to tame these cables? |

The best thing I've seen is a tube that looks a bit like an air duct but is split along the side. Cables can enter and exit wherever they like. The advantage to this over tying the cables together and to the desk is that it's easier to put stuff in and take it out. Tom Reingold

I think the ultimate promise is Bluetooth -- most if not all of peripherals would be wireless. I have a mess of wires, too, and try to ignore it until once in a blue moon I realize there are large dust balls gathering... Got 'em for the stereo, too Pete

This is slightly less technical than bluetooth, and even the air duct/tube solution (which I believe they sell at Ikea), but here's what this little Martha in training has done. Cut a few small pieces of paper. On each one, write something different - printer, monitor, scanner, etc. Use scotch tape to secure said pieces of paper to the appropriate wires, right above each plug. This doesn't solve your problem of unsightly, tangled wires. But it'll save you the hour you were spending trying to locate the correct plug to pull. |
