My husband and I recently moved to South Orange with our 2 month old son. We would love to go out together some weekend nights, yet don't know how to find a good babysitter. Does anyone have any resources for people and/or organizations to contact to find qualified babysitters for infants? Thank you for your help. |

You will probably get some responses here. If you would like a couple of referrals, send me a private message by clicking on my username here and following the instructions provided. Also, another good source for referrals is probably the Newcomers club ... which is a good group to join for many other reasons also. I think that they do not meet in the summer, but usually meet on the first Wednesday of each month, so look for an announcement in the News-Record for an early September meeting. At least one of their officers posts here and may be able to provide more info. |

I have a 15 year old daughter, student at Columbia, who loves kids and keeps busy sitting in the neighborhood (we're in SO). Amazingly, one of her favorite families to sit for has 4 little kids -- she enjoys being with them (and comes home tired)! PM me if you'd like to call/talk with her or meet her. Pete

You may want to attend the local new mothers coffee sponsored by Mothers and More. I met a lot of moms when she was two months old and now we all babysit for eachother. |

Just a thought, and a question -- do you think there might be a market out there for a thirty-something Maplewood husband and wife babysitting team? Two extremely responsible adults (wife is a former baby sitter/camp counselor extraordinaire, husband has no formal paid child care experience but is great with his nieces & nephews), with no children of our own, might be willing to spend an evening here and there watching your kids while you enjoy a much-needed night out -- you'd get the peace of mind of knowing you've left your kids in the care of two adults who can handle anything that comes their way, and we'd get some extra cash (gotta keep up with those rising property taxes!) and invaluable experience for when we start a family of our own. Of course we'd have to charge more for our services than a 15-year-old girl would, but IMHO I think we'd be well worth it, am curious to see what you all think. Any and all feedback, pro or con, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Amanda - I love that idea - I would definitely use a husband and wife babysitting team - how much do you think you would charge however? |

Good question, let me consult my hubby and see what he thinks, and in the meantime I'm open to any suggestions -- this idea is definitely a work-in-progress. I know that I got about $8 - $10/hour sitting solo in Manhattan back in the early/mid 90's, so it would have to be more than that . . . |

Just out of curiousity, how much are evening/weekend babysitters, many of whom are students, generally paid? Also, does anybody have any suggestions for childcare for somebody who cannot be back home by 6:00 pm and sometimes will have to work late? A friend of mine will be returning to work full-time in a few weeks and does not know what to do. She has contacted several people who are looking for nanny positions, but all say they will not work past 5:00 pm, or possibly 6:00 pm. While this is reasonable, how can she provide care for her child if she and her both husband cannot get home that early? |

I usually pay about $10/hour for an adult babysitter. For a young teen, 12/13, I pay about $7/hour and round up. |

I believe that the YMCA childcare runs until 7:00 or 7:30. |

For part-time/on-call services, I've paid very competent college students $7-8/hour (1-5 yo child). Algebra: $7/hour seems like a high rate for a 12yo. Minimum wage is only $5 and change. Is your sitter watching more than 1 child? How many years experience does s/he have? |

pmart -- I think so too! My husband overpays. The 13 year old boy who babysits must be thrilled. We have one son who's four and basically babysitting him is as easy as ordering a pizza and teaching him how to play Sony Playstation. |

Jab, My nanny who is available (see ad on the classifieds) works until 7:00 twice a week, and 6:00 the rest. Maybe your friend should give her a call. Check the ad for the relevant info. |
