My daughter and I saw a black & yellow bird in our yard that was unlike any I'd ever seen before this summer. It seemed to have black or dark blue wings and a bright yellow back. It was quite stunning when it spread it's wings.
I'd seen one at the pool a few days earlier, too.
It looks a little larger than a finch, but smaller and more slender than a sparrow. It was very enamored of the sunflowers in my neighbor's yard.
Any ideas?

American Goldfinch - New Jersey's state bird.
One's been eating the sunflowers in my yard, too.

I have also been hearing a strange sounding bird out on the golf course the past few days, it sounds like a large bird. About a month ago, a pair of owls were hooting very loudly at night for a week or two, then they took off. I've seen deer, foxes and herons there, I am wondering if it is turning into some kind of sanctuary.

Mem, I've also noticed a big increase in all kinds of animals around town. Maybe it has something to do with the all the wet weather?

As for this bird with the strange voice, could this possibibly be a very, very large yellow bird, with long skinney legs, and a small head?
