The phenomenon used to be known around here as the "Face To Face", but my buddies on the internet tell me that to be considered really avant these days, one must now "mob". It's harmless, they tell me. And fun, and inexpensive, and over before you know it. Sounds like my sex life. And they tell me it's spreading around the globe like a happy computer virus: thousands of giddy mortals simply following directions contained in emails (from ???), showing up somewhere at a given moment, doing something goofy, and dispersing back into the cosmos. Sounds almost like the Republican National Convention. Anyway, You're all going to LOVE it! Now, I'm not quite sure whether doing this sort of thing will make you a better person, or save the planet, or destroy dental plaque, or solve anyone's actual problems, but Gee -- doesn't it sound like fun?! So here's what we're gonna do: Rather than do a Mass Private Line to invite all the Leos out there (you all know who you are anyhow), I'm relying on the staggering direct power of MOL's connection to its Reader/Lurker Community. LEOS AWAKE! THESE ARE YOUR INSTRUCTIONS: "At exactly 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 16th, all Leos should silently converge on the parking lot of the Baird Community Center in South Orange. There you will be given further written instructions by (mortal) uniformed members of the MOL user community. Follow the instructions." Your participation in this event is to be anonymous, and while you will NOT be subject to police surveillance (so far as I know), be aware that we're all watching you from Up Here... Feel free bring Leos of all ages with you to this event, but be sure they are truly Leos, and BE ON TIME, or the overall effect of the moment will be diminished. No prizes, souvenirs, memorabilia, or other chatchkes will be given away. This will be your only notification. Please pass the word, and attend MOL's first Flash Mob. --The Oracle of MOL BTW: The Oracle is not a Leo, but Soda is, so I rather expect him to show up to make trouble. Now, I'm counting on the Leo females out there to promptly and properly subdue him if he does make an appearance. I'm sure you ladies all know how to handle a rowdy lion, now, dontcha? |

It's off. Cancelled. Kaput. Not Happenin'. Fuhgetaboudit. A rep from The Front Office just told me to back off the flashmob thing. Says it's bad for the timespace continuum. Anyway, he had an (had "a"?) MIB with him, so I figured maybe it's still early enough to nip this thing in the bud. --The Oracle of MOL BTW: Sorry, Dave. I know how much you would love all the great PR such a stunt would generate, but the more I think about it, the less I want to do that to my friend Andy Brady. Hi-5. |

Which reminds me to call a Perseid meteor shower Flash Mob on Flood's Hill tonight. At 10:30pm wander around aimlessly, gazing up. Do not show if it is raining. We had about 200 people last year. |

On a totally unrelated note, let me state for the record that I'm very, very FOR Random Acts Of Kindness (which, no doubt, might possibly include a buncha Leos singing "Happy Birthday" to one another in a parking lot on a Saturday in August...). Hope that's OK with Everybody In The Front Office. Shheeesh. The Oracle of MOL BTW: Dave, thanks for not immediately yanking the thread. |

Perseus will be watching, as usual, from his couch in the Pantheon of Heros. He looks good for someone his age, BTW, which you don't wanna say to his face.... --The Oracle of MOL |

BobbestK: Heard the one about the guy who goes to the shrink and sez, "I dunno, Doc. One minute I think I'm a Wigwam, and the next I think I'm a Teepee. Doc sez, "It's obvious: you're too tense". --The Oracle of MOL BTW: Emily Litella wants to know what's all this she's hearing about FleshMopping... |

Some interesting reading from Howard Rheingold at this link on "smart mobs" or "flash mobs". Perhaps a MOL Flash Mob at St. James Gate when it opens? |

I'm sure we could get into the Blogsphere if we did a decent flash mob. I was thinking of one in front of the News-Record building. 200 people chanting: "No More Typos" I think I saw a Seton Hall flash mob at The Gaslight last Friday. About 40 students walked in through the front door to the restaurant area, sat down, probably ordered water or perhaps were proofed or simply asked to leave, and then walked out. |

Dave: Whilst rallying The Mob to congeal At Flood's Hill for meteoric celebrations, Thou shouldst foregettest not! Verily as well, thou ought Remonstrate benighted revelers all: Come ye to The Hill, but more earlier still! Hudson Players shall appear, assailing all With revulsion and dread from Will Shakespeare. A fanfare we entreat from The harmonicas: Tonight's Flood's-On-Avon Treat: Titus Andronicus! --The Oracle of MOL BTW: It's free, but there's no rain site... |

Had to abandon Titus early tonight. Too much canibalism. Not the play... the mosquitos. The canibalism in the play comes in the final act. (Amazing that people brought young children to Shakepseare's very R rated play. I would have nightmares for weeks if I'd seen it at that age.) |
