I am about to become "one of those dog people" I am looking for some insider info from the Dog Mommies and Daddies in SO/Mpld. I work in SoHo, and the dog community there is pretty tight. Is there a similar dog click in the area?? What parks are dog friendly? How strict are local leash laws? Can anyone recomend a Vet in the area? If so, what do they charge? Has anyone gotten their pooch microchipped? Would you recomend it? Are there any dog playgroups around?

Hi there, We moved to Maplewood 1 month ago and we have 2 dogs - a toy and miniature poodle. We have not yet looked for a doggie park or playgroups. I think that leashing is a law everywhere... but I may be wrong. If anyone has anymore informed info that pertains to a dog's life in Maplewood... please reply |

Hi, My husband and I own an Airedale terrier who loves the dog park in Westfield. It's in Echo Lake Park off of Springfield Ave. It's completely fenced in and there is a ton of room for the dogs to run around and be doggy. Weekends seem to be the most popular time to go. We had our dog chipped for peace of mind - worth it just for that. Fortunately we haven't had to use it for the intended purpose. Our vet did it for us. She (the vet) is a bit out of the way in East Hanover. We love her but you may want to look for someone in the area. I hope this helps. |

You can have a small microchip, the size of a grain of rice, inplanted in your pets neck. Most shelters have readers which read the id number. They look it up in a database and find the owner. I don't have a pet at the moment but my brother, who is director of animal control for the Boulder CO. Humane Society, thinks they are great. Your lost pet may lose its collar, but not this. (Also great for indoor cats who don't have tags but manage to slip out every now and then.) |

Keep your dog on a leash -- you don't have skunks, potentially rabid racoons, grumpy deer, and rabid feral cats in SoHo! That said, the Westfield dog park is fabulous. Wouldn't it be nice if we had one in Memorial Park.....whoops, that's a whole other can of worms. We love Dr. Norman Stack, Valley Vet Hospital, on Valley at Millburn Ave. Sorry I don't have his phone # right now. A little brusque but an absolute dog-lover, no-nonsense but so soothing to a panicky doggy-mommy like myself. And very reasonably priced, too. He also gives a lot of help and time to the local animal-rescue group. |

I'm moving to South Orange (from Park Slope) next month with my beloved and active dog. I called the South Orange Animal Control Officer who advised me that there are no parks in SO that allow offleash, but, in Maplewood, before 9 a.m., people with dogs offleash meet at Memorial Park. Good luck ...and hope to see you there. |

Andrea: You were misinformed. Off leash dogs are not permitted in Memorial Park at any time! Furthermore, as a result of a major outcry about a year or two ago, the leash laws are being much more strongly enforced in Maplewood now than they were previously. Check the attic for the full story. You will find plenty of background on this in Soapbox. |

...or privateline me (I'm a dog owner) and I will indoctrinate you into our secret offleash meeting places. Seriously, there are offleash dog parks in Livingston and Westfield, among other places. I'll be glad to give you the current scoop. |
