Hey. I'm trying to get a rough idea of whether there are people in the South Orange/Maplewood area who might be interested in working towards setting up a community garden somewhere in the area. My partner and I have a plot at the Morris County community garden at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and we really love it. However even this 25 minute drive is really too far to put all the neccessary work into it. A garden close by allows you to work there more often, which really makes a big difference. There are only 2 public community gardens in northern New Jersey that I’m aware of – Morristown and Denville. There are many advantages to being involved in a community garden, even in an area like SO/M in which many people have a yard which could have a garden placed in it. There’s a wealth of gardening experience available to you from other gardeners, a great sense of community as you see everyone else’s gardens develop, and a specific place where you can focusing on gardening without outside interruptions. I'm trying to guage what interest exists before I start to make more concrete plans. The Agriculture people over at the Rutgers Co-operative Extension provide a lot of informational and scientific support to groups that try to start these things, but it would be neccessary to have some numbers before looking for land - that is, of course, the most important and difficult to secure resource. (The Morris County garden has approx. 110 10'x20' plots. Members pay ~$50 per year. It's located on some land behind the water treatment plant on East Hanover Avenue.) So, anybody interested in working on something like this? Do you know anyone who might be? It's really a blast when you get into it. |

Call Maplewood Town Hall. The public gardens are right behind it. |

I believe James lives in South Orange. Good luck on this, James. I was lamenting the lack of gardening space recently - I would love to grow beans, butternut squash, and tomatoes. I'm jonesing for a Jersey 'mato! |

No Mem, that is not a public garden; it is used by the Maplewood Garden Club for club-related (as opposed to personal) gardening. James, if "a wealth of gardening experience available to you from other gardeners" is what you're seeking, why not join the Maplewood Garden Club? You don't have to live in MW to be a member. |
