Ok, as an NYC transplant, I NEED to know what those creatures are that make all the interesting noises at night. I was used to hearing traffic. Now it's bugs...and I can't even see them. And how the heck can they go on making all that noise non-stop, anyway?

Probably cicadas ....
They are rather large and fly. You will see their
brown outer shell sometimes on trees, left behind.

When I was a kid we used to be able to tell how hot it was by timing there noise or something like that. I'm trying to find it on the internet now.
