Help! Today, when my free trial from Dell ended, I "responsibly" downloaded Mcafee Inbternet Security, with all its components. NOW I am so frustrated because this paid version that I downloaded isn't installed right, it didn't install privacy service or firewall, and I can't log in to the McAfee site because when I put in my userid (email) the system replaces it with "gdoggdoggdog". I just can't make it see my real email address to log in. ALSO my email (Outlook Express) won't send, I get an error message that it doesn't recognize "gdoggdoggdog" to send the email. But I can get email.
I found references online to a worm called "gdog" that does this kind of attack.
I hope I am explaining this right. McAfee doesn't detect any viruses on my system, I even got to the symantec web site and did their free system scan, and it also did not find a virus. What can I use to clean this? Anyone, please help!

Good luck.

Hope you backed up your application programs and your data just in case.

P.S.: You might try a google search (www.google.com) for additional sites which have information on this worm and how to remove it.

Thanks, Joan,
Follow-up to yesterday's problem. I had minimal use of the web, because so much trouble getting windows to boot up by the end of the evening. Eventually I was able to uninstall the new software I had downloaded, and that took care of the "gdog" problem. Whatever that was. A google search online indicated that it might have something to do with a program called Guard Dog, but I don't recall ever installing that.
Long story shorter- I contacted mcafee by web chat, they told me to make sure I only had the new virus scan loaded (I think I'd had an old one and a new one both running), and that should solve my problem.
It helped minimally, then my hard drive crashed. That was that. I called Dell, they are sending me a new drive and a technician to install everything, it's under warranty- only 3 months old. Now how to get my money back from McAfee...

Thanks for listening :-)

6yearrez:

A good rule to follow is to always uninstall the old version of a program before installing the new (unless you are doing an update?). Guard Dog sounds like the name of an old McAfee program so that may indeed be what caused your problem.

Perhaps it is because I use a dial-up connection to the internet but I have always prefered buying software disks at a computer store to downloading software from the Internet. It provides for greater speed, greater control, and I have the disks in case something goes wrong with the installation or I have to reload windows -- again.

Perhaps you can get McAfee to send you the disks for the software you purchased on line. Even if you have to pay a small additional fee, it would be worth it.

Good luck with the reinstallation.

Joan
