Does anyone know of a planetarium or a place where you can go to get a great view of Mars in or near town?

There are some suggestions in the Star-Ledger. You may want to try to observatory at Union County College, in Cranford. Or, just use a high place with a good view of the Southeast (top of Flood's Hill would probably qualify), and a pair of binoculars.

I would ditto Nohero's suggestion on the observatory in Union. Planning to go there myself (my small 4.5" telescope....and anything under perhaps 10"....can only give you a white disk with no features). Certainly nothing like the pictures you see which require an enormous aperture and very long exposure-astrophotography equipment. Union County College's Sperry Observatory has a 24" (26"?) reflector and a 10" refractor....these would be wonderful scopes to use. There are public open-houses every Friday night between about 7:30-10:30pm.

The prettiest view otherwise is with the naked eye or binoculars.
