There was an article about this in the Star Ledger today. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with a location with easy access for young kids. Sounds like a fun family outing....I think ;)

Seaside Park, NJ. 5th Avenue Pier. No badge needed after this weekend. Crabbing's better in September! Nice long pier, with a little playground if the kids get bored. About and hour and twenty minutes from Mapleberry, RFD. GSP to Exit 82A ... Nice drive.

Whenever we've done it, we've rented boats, and it's much more fun than doing it on a pier. There's a place called the Wheelhouse Marina in Seaside Park, not 5 minutes past the pier referenced above, and i think rentals are somewhere between $35-60 for about 2 hours.

But then again, i've never done it with young kids, so i don't know if it would be preferable. You do get a bit soggier.

As for gear, if you go to Seaside, there are several bait shops along Central Ave. between where you get off the bridge and when you reach the pier/marina that sell everything you'll need. Mainly it's bait (bunker fish or chicken backs/necks from the grocery store), long string, sinkers to weigh down the drop lines (you can also use spark plugs), a net on a pole, and a bucket/bushell basket to put the crabs in.

I can't remember how much seating there is on the piers, so you may want some lawn chairs as well. And food/drinks.

You can also go to the Navesink River in Rumson. You can rent a boat and you can snag the little guys right off the bridge pilings. Just need a net and a bucket and then of course, you'll need some vinegar, Old Bay seasoning and a 6-pack when you get home. Yummy!
