Does anyone know of a good local temp agency. I have been out of work for 9 months now and thought a temp agency might be a good option. Thank you!!! Kelly |

I don't know if you are interested in going into the city, but...when I was laid off three years ago, I signed on with Manpower. They are excellent. I have actually been temping full-time, if you will all along with only a couple of minor gaps between projects. I'm currently in graduate school and still get in gigs on my breaks. I'm actually temping as we speak! Private line me with any questions. I can give you names of people to speak with there. |

My large company uses the services of Kelly Services (for administrative assistants) and Kelly Technical Services in New Brunswick for more skilled labor. Don't let the New Brunswick location scare you...they place people all over the state. |

If you have at least 60 college credits, why not put your name on the district substitute list? (which is not just for classroom teachers; librarians, nurses, and secretaries all need subs) |

I don't know what it's like now (I've heard it's bad--i.e. few jobs and lousy pay), but I worked as a temp for over 10 years (while I was a starving artist) during the 70's, 80's and 90's and always got work, even in bad times. It's a great way to try out new careers, make contacts and find permanent employment. There's also the bad side which includes getting treated like dirt, working with the most difficult people (the people no one will work for often use temps), unfair labor practices, etc. but as long as you have a good sense of the absurd, the life of a "clerical slut" can be interesting and enjoyable. The way I always started was to look up temporary employment in the yellow pages and register with as many agencies as possible. I would collect cards from each agency--they assign you a "counselor" --and every morning I would take my pile of cards and call every one to ask it anything was available. If nothing was available, I would leave the house and go register for more agencies. Eventually, someone would send me out for a day or so and then after that I usually got longer assignments. Persistence paid off then and it probably does now too. One other thing I noticed was that smaller agencies usually paid better and had fewer dumb tests than the larger chain type agencies (like Manpower--which used to give the most STUPID tests--including psychological evaluations--but I don't know what it is like now). Good luck--If you want anymore information, feel free to private line me or ask here in this thread. |

Manpower does still give the stupid tests. No psych eval, though. |
