H E L P ! For the last 3 days we have killed about 50 flies each day in our kitchen. They are also in the basement. Has anyone else had this problem? If we keep killing them will we eventually win the war? Or do you advise an exterminator? Where did they come from? We are not filthy house keepers.

I've never seen so many flies in all the years I've been here! And for every 1 we kill, 5 more take its place. It could be the wet summer. I remember reading they like damp environments, especially organic waste, like lawn clippings, etc. The sites below look like they may be helpful. They're from the cooperative extension programs of UC and Penn State. Rutgers has a cooperative extension program too, but they're site wasn't as easy to find stuff on. http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7457.html#HOUSE%20FLY http://www.ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/houseflies.htm |

What do your flies look like? If they are metalic green, bad news (fuzzy gray is better - just common house flies)...apparently these "bottle flies" only come from a "dead host" (in the words of our exterminator)...we had the Ammityville Horror thing in our *bedroom* recently (which is on the third floor - seems a critter had gotten in to our attic crawl space & died! I was also told that something can die in your wall or flies can lay their eggs in a wall space. Once the "host" was removed (& the area sprayed & stinkey strips placed & subsequently removed but I still feel I can smell), we still had about a day or two of flies before their life cycle ended. Another charming part - given their origin, they were filled with blood when we squished them...I'm convinced that if the CSI folks came with their special lights our bedroom would light up like a murder scene. Good luck!! |

Oh my God! We have green-headed ones. And they squish with blood. But -- The amount of flies seems to have abated in the last 1-2 days. We thought the source may have been an opening to the sewer line in the basement which was not completely closed and when the attic fan was on they were sucked up to the kitchen. Checked out the links, which were interesting. Thank each of you for your input. I hope there is no dead animal. I don't smell anything foul (and don't hope to). Looking for a dead animal is not my idea of a good time. Hope it doesn't have anything to do with the mouse bait we put out in the basement some months ago. (Uh - oh!) |

Besides the toxicity to other animals and humans, the problem with all those poison bates is the risk that the targeted animal will die on the premises. There are definitely much safer and better ways to get rid of mice, such as a good spring loaded mouse trap. |

I thought they were breeding in my kitty litter - I went to change it and a cloud flew out, and they are all over the house - plain black flies, but huge and loud, never had so many before. There's nothing like spending your whole life in a BAR!
