Has anyone else noticed that the Pathmark in South Orange has THE BEST in-store music? Nothing but classic R&B ... It's GREAT. |

I'm always boppin' to it. I'll be softly singing along, and walk past someone else doing it, and you can't help but grin at each other. |

Chris, it depends on what time of day you're there. around lunch time it tends to be old school R&B. The weirdest thing is when they play the '80s New Wave mix. Don't get to hear Haircut 100 and Sioxsie and the Banshees too often, but Pathmark is the LAST place I'd expect to hear them. |

OK. So I'm modifying my grocery store fantasy. Wegman's buys out Pathmark BUT keeps the music. |

Liz: I avoid posting these days because Art could come in at any time calling me stupid, immature, wet behind the ears or what ever, but the Wegmans thing, unfortunately, really is a fantasy. My cousin is a VP there and they have no intention of expanding to the NY suburbs. If you were to compare prices Wegmans, it’s more expensive then their competitors, but people will drive a little farter for the convenience. In North Jersey the research has shown that we (Northern NJites) will not drive the extra 15 – 20 min for shopping. In central jersey for instance, a typical family has to drive 15 -30 min to a grocery store, adding 15 min to that trip isn’t a big deal, here we drive 5 min at the most another 15 min would quadruple our drive. On a good note they have talked about a Wegmans express. It’s kind of a la Carte type store that will have some interesting shopping for a breakfast or dinner, but not the whole store. This could be years away though, but it would still be a neat idea.

"I avoid posting these days because Art" I'm sorry Brett, you make me feel bad. What could have possibly happened between us that I would call you stupid, immature, or wet behind the ears? Really, post whenever you like, I’ll stay clear of you if you want. Who I am is a possibility of all people being fully self-expressed... plus my bark is usually worst then my bite. |

More importantly, where does Wegmans weigh in on the crucial question of R&B vs. '80s New Wave? |

"In North Jersey the research has shown that we (Northern NJites) will not drive the extra 15 – 20 min for shopping." Brett- this could be because 15-20 minutes of drive time in no traffic often translates to 45-60 minutes of drive time in traffic. Who wants to add grocery shopping to the list of activities that need to be scheduled around rush hour, peak travel times, etc.? |

I'll bet a lot of the folks that go to Trader Joe's drive an extra 15-20 minutes--I do. And the folks who go to Shop Rite in Livingston etc. do. And, of course there's lots more population density here. So if that's the reason, it's a lousy one. The NYT article I read a while ago about Wegman's in NJ suggested that it was more about the cost of a large enough piece of land for a full service Wegman's.

"I'll bet a lot of the folks that go to Trader Joe's drive an extra 15-20 minutes--I do." So do I. If you haven't yet, try the TJ's in Westfield rather than Florham Park. There's the usual product line, plus they carry wine and the drive is about 20 minutes from SO/Mwood, actually a bit closer than FP. (Take Springfield Ave. across Morris Ave.; it becomes Meisel; continue on Meisel over 22, past Williams Nursery, and turn right on Broad. Turn right again on Elm in the center of Westfield; Trader Joe's is on the left about a block down.) Bottles of perfectly drinkable Merlot and Cabernet are available from, yes, $3. Stuff that costs $8-9 on sale elsewhere is $6-7. I stock up on Charles Shaw (the CA "three buck Chuck") and excellent Chilean Merlots for under $6, which leaves budgetary room to try out some pricier wines as well. Of course, they carry beer, too, but the selection is not as good as in their CA stores. The time spent travelling to TJ's is a substantial amount of money saved on alcohol, especially if one buys by the case.

Yup. I get my booze at the Westfield store, but I like the Florham Park store better somehow--easier to navigate and I'm more likely to find everything on my list. |

I saw a Muzak van behind me one day and the name on the front of the van was written backwards (Like an ambulance's) ... Is there such a thing as a Muzak emergency?

The History Channel said that Musak was started in elevators because people used to freak out when they were first invented. Musak kept them calm. |

Years ago a friend of mine worked at a company that piped in Musak under the theroy that a calm workforce was a productive workforce. It drove him (and the other under 30s) bonkers. One afternoon, following a long an liquid lunch, he skulked into the Musak room and turned the equiptment off. Noone noticed. Chris, sorry about the thread drift. |

Jeez, can't even drift a bit in the virtual cafe--what is this world coming to. (I'd insert a smiley if I could make it work right.) Well, I hadn't ever really noticed the music much at Pathmark, but I had wondered why I don't hate going there, even when it's crowded, even when they were re-arranging all the aisles and everything was a mess. Maybe the music is working for me. |

Brett, Wegman's is opening a new store in Woodbridge, which for us here is Maplewood is just a short breeze down the GSP (and, if you get on at milemarker 139, toll free, too!). I don't know how Wegman's classifies what a NY suburb is, but, for me, Woodbridge is close enough! |

My wife and I grew up with similar fond memories of Wegmans in Upstate NY. We actually look forward to doing a Wegmans run when we go back because in general, the grocery stores in this area suck. I'm sorry scratch that out. I meant that most grocery stores in this area are less than adequate on customer service, diversity and quality of goods, cleanliness/hygiene and prices!!! I like the fruit and vegetable selection at whole foods but do not like paying the price for items that must have been hand picked by virgins. How else do you justify the price? Whole Foods not to rag on them, do have good pricing, selection and quality on other things but you end up having to go to half a dozen stores to get everything that a Wegmans offers. Next best thing is the A&P at Green Acres Mall. By the way - nothing beats "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" on Muzak. |

Ironman: then actually TAKE IT BACK, via a discussion or even just a reference to the original, UNEVOLVED version of the topic. Pathmark sucks, dude. Maybe the music helps a little, but it doesn't turn $hit into shinola. |

Was singing along in Pathmark yesterday afternoon, three kids in tow. It was pleasantly uncrowded. We all enjoyed the music. That, and no crowd mid-afternoon will make me return there more often than my once-every-few-weeks. Plus, they now have Vitasoy... |

I went to Pathmark after reading this thread, and you're right! Too bad it's not such a great store. But it's OK sometimes. My wife likes the Shoprite at Liberty and Morris in Union. They have some good Hispanic foods there. Tom Reingold
