I have searched archives and can't find an answer to the question: what is this white funk that is slowly but surely covering the bark on my lilac tree? it looks flakey in some places, downy in others. to be sure, though, it is progressing. what is this, and what should I do to de-funk? I don't want to lose the tree!! |

I am so happy not be alone in the LILAC FUNK world! We have recently had the same situation with one of our trees, and only on one.. so I am anxious to prevent it from spreading to the other. Hopefully someone knows what we can do to stop it! It is also covering the leaves, not just the trunk, of my tree. |

It is powdery mildew, most common on lilacs and zinnias at this time of year. It isn't lethal, and will be ok when the lilacs' leaves drop at the first frost. |

Maplewoody - thanks for the reply. here's a short footnote: my tree has actually had this for a little while. at first it was on just one branch of the bark, but yesterday I noticed it has spread. still the same thing, and still not to worry? |

Better to check with the experts over at the Millstone Nursery off Valley...They'll give you a better diagnosis, and have the products if needed to use. |
