My dream SO would have a grand Italian-style piazza complete with fountain at the Beifus site. It would include wonderful outdoor cafes and small shops and the air would be filled with the smell of fresh baked breads and pastries. It would be a great place for meeting friends and just relaxing. Well, I can dream, can't I? |

http://www.montclairbookcenter.com/ Dave, it's off Bloomfield but on a one-way street so you gotta drive around the block -- it's very close to Hampton Furniture. We only buy at Montclair Book Center. Really nice place with a knowledgable staff. |

Of course minor things like no crime, racial harmony, no corruption in local politics, socially integrated neighborhoods, knowing all your neighbors, etc do also come to mind in my dream SO/Maplewood |

I'd like to replace the debate over the Verizon wireless tower with a pair of towns that has cell phone coverage for all, all over the two towns. From what I read, I get the impression people would rather fight than give in to their own needs. Overall, I think I'm already living in my dream town. Ask me in a year. Of course, it's not perfect. This is the first good looking place I've lived in. I've lived in Manhattan, Boston, and Edison NJ. I concede bklyntonj's point about the discomfort of being on a line of haves and havenots, but what can I do about it? Tom Reingold

Oh, and while I'm dreaming, I guess I'll ask for a town where I can buy ANYTHING I need without needing a car. I do like owning a car, but I don't like needing it. In my previous life, I did everything by bicycle. I don't see how anyone can do that in NJ. Tom Reingold

ErinS and others- keep your eye on the Town Bookstore in Maplewood; it is shortly to have new ownership (October). Service at the present incarnation has always been good, but the new plans include significant (read: comfortable/creative/funky) changes in the ambience and layout that sound great. They'll order/search for anything not in stock- they found an obscure, small press book about the Ashokan Reservoir for me and just charged a nominal fee for shipping. Had it in a few days. |

JGTierney - and anyone looking for a good Thai place - Thai Thai in Stirling (or Gilette..) on Springfield Ave. Yeah, it's about 20 minutes away but it is THE best Thai I've had. Very well priced and normally needs reservations on weekends. I HIGHLY recommend it. |

South Beach Gal - That was wonderful. I could just picture it. Maybe some of the trustees are reading this thread or it can be posted in the South Orange Specific thread. It really is a dream that could come true. |

Thanks, doublea. My other dream is that it would appeal to the powers that be. It would really make this town something special. Having such a place could add to the draw of a performing arts center and to the general life of the town, both day and evening. But could it really happen? |

- a huge independent record store (think princeton record exchange) - a korean bbq restaurant - an indoor workout facility with running track, pool, tennis courts - a local government so competent that i'd have no problem affording the above gym membership because my property taxes would be going DOWN $500 a year instead of UP. (this thread is a DREAM scenario, right?) |

South Beach Gal - There's a trustees' meeting tonight where a lot of issues are going to be discussed. If you have cable, you can watch it on channel 19 (or attend). As suggested, maybe if you post it on the South Orange Specific thread, you may get some feedback from the public as well as some officials. It's a good place to start. With the way things are going (and I'm just being realistic, not negative) maybe it's a good time to put some new ideas out for consideration. I think it's an incredible idea which I suspect would get a lot of public support, and maybe even support from the officials. Never hurts to suggest it. |

Oooh... I love the idea of someplace nearby with indoor running track, pool, tennis courts... and RACQUETBALL! I'd like SOPAC to be finished, to be beautiful, and to be a massive success, bringing a wide variety of fabulous talent from near and far, from the Groove Collective to Steve Reich to the Tokyo Quartet. I'd like a modern design shop such as Design Within Reach with furniture, lighting, & accessories by Eames, Le Corbusier, Nelson, Bertoia, as well as lesser-known but talented modern designers. I'd like all the schools and municpal buildings to be solar powered, and I'd like the South Orange gaslights to be replaced with solar-powered streetlights. I'd like to see new art/sculpture by local artists at train stations and other public places, changed every 6 months or so. I'd like the towns to initiate no-cars-allowed days in the town centers once a month during the warm months. And while I'm really dreaming, I'd like the two towns to create a huge wireless network, so every resident could have a superfast internet connection for free. |

*Dogs allowed in the pub *Bubble tea *Someplace for lots of xeroxing & office supplies (yes I know there's a Mailboxes Etc. in South Orange, but it's always mobbed) *Adults-only screenings of cool independent films (it was AGONY listening to mommies whispering explanations to their kids during "Spirited Away") *Cable cars up the hills from the train station *Lots more lilacs *Kim's Video *A total and complete ban on Hummers *(oh stop it, you know what I mean) *No mean dogs *Guaranteed ripening of all tomatos *Belgian waffles and frites |

My perfect M/SO? A place much like our curent M/SO, but without the whiners who want every government service we already have, and more, who want our schools to be more highly ranked, and who bitch and moan about the taxes we pay and blame it all on the evil "them." |

I have a few dreams for our two towns. Because our residents don’t have any accommodations in either town for visiting family and friends, of course I would like to see a fair bed and breakfast ordinance. Also, it's about time we do something to reduce traffic, increase parking, help our business districts, and give residents our own long overdue public transportation system. For this to happen it means both towns should agree to provide an all day jitney.... |

It's early, so I really am still dreaming...I'd like the following: *A Block Buster on Springfield Ave, with parking. *Another bar restaurant (Lion's whatever only less chi-chi). Maybe replace that awful Water Lilies place. *A seafood restaurant, sawdust on floor type *Another vote for the all day jitney so I can go to the bar/restaurants and not drive *Speed bumps on Parker Avenue *An Ace or TruValue hardware store on Springfield *A CD/record store *Nice teenaged babysitters who cost $4-$5 an hour instead of $7+. Then I could afford to get on the jitney, go out for evening and not be bankrupt! |

Thanks, ajc. The other mode of transport I've hear of is golf carts -- though I doubt they'd work in our environment. Have a friend in Atlanta, and some in FL, who live in planned towns or whatever where you pretty much can only use golf carts to get around. Low mph, electric. Don't know if you can have a couple of glasses of wine and still drive them, though. I'm terribly conservative about alcohol and driving, yet I do like to have a few on occasion. What a conundrum! In my old state, about once a month they had these "loops." Mostly catered to swinging singles, but it amounted to a set of buses that you could get on for free/cheap and hit all the hot spots...Ran till like 2:00 a.m. |

Dreams can come true. Check out the Dancing Goat Cafe. We have been frequenting the new and vibrant DANCING GOAT CAFE in South Orange. The Sunday evening poetry readings for local poets/writers has been such a joy. The cafe has lovely classic ambiance.... massive velvet drapes, comfortable seating, books on shelves, and even some games for kids to keep amused. We try to frequent and support it, letting go of Starbucks for the Capuccino cravings and hanging out. It really reminds me of some of the newer cafes that were springing up when we left Park Slope for Maplewood a few years ago. |
