There is currently a proposal in Seattle to place a 10-cent tax on all Espresso drinks to raise revenue for social service programs. I wonder how much Maplewood could raise by taxing all drinks served at the new pub at the same rate. I doubt that the pub's patrons are price-sensitive enough to object. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/02/national/02ESPR.html |

Look, they're already charging full price for a 12 oz "pint". And no, they don't say it's a pint, but it's an Irish bar and you'd get nothing less in Dublin. But, you tell me what social service my 10-cents would support and I'll think about it. |

But if you're willing to pay that price for your 12 oz., then another nickel or dime isn't much of a difference. Anyway, maybe the pub could collect enough nickel and dimes to build some type of parking facility in/near the village so that it would be easier to park before going to the pub. |

jab - I wasn't aware that parking facilities fell under the "social services" umbrella. I'll keep my dime.... unless you can lift your social conscience a bit higher and suggest something else. drewdix - didn't see the sign... perhaps I'll bring a measuring cup next time and demand that I get what I pay for! |

At 10 cents a glass, I figure the town would have to tax about 300 million drinks to have any sort of meaningful impact on property taxes. Drink up everybody! |

Also, the shot glasses are of vastly different sizes. I went with some friends, and we had two rounds of shots, and the first round shot glass had about 60% of capacity of the second (which were charged at the same price). Perhaps as a social service we can create a bureau of standards and measurements. |

don't they use those glasses with fill lines on them in Ireland? and if so - shouldn't they also use them at St. James Gate - both as an homage and a courtesy to the patrons? I say this with all respect. and indeed an odd admiration for anyone who still does shots. |

SoOrLady, I mentioned social services as how Seattle intends to use the increased revenue. With respect to Maplewood, I only wondered how much could be raised. I mention parking only because parking seems like something that could be a problem for pub-goers. In terms of social services, there are any number of possibilities. People on another thread seem to want more after-school programs for kids. The skate park seems a worthy project. Anyway, I primarily thought Seattle's proposal was a novel one interesting enough to mention to others. I wasn't seriously suggesting that Maplewood have such a tax on drinks. |

jab - sorry, I'm relatively new to posting on MOL, I looked for a tongue-in-cheek smiley, but couldn't find one.... knew you weren't serious. BUT.. like the post office that charges a bit extra for some stamps with the extra going to a cause (i.e. breast cancer), perhaps "taxing" some of the quaffs would work...(extra 10-cents for a Guiness supports ___ ) I'd support anything for the kids - after school programs or something/someplace for our local kids on the weekends. As far as parking for the pub - the walk back to their cars will do them good. (that's a tongue-in-cheek again). |

Jab: With all that drinking going on, we need a jitney route to and from the bar much more than we need a parking garage. At the very least, the jitney driver could serve as everyone else's designated driver. |

I believe the State legislature would need to vote to allow a municipality to levy its own sales tax. With that said, I would never support a tax on such a fine establishment as St. James Gate. Just by opening they're increasing business traffic for all stores in the Village. |
