We're in the process of buying a home in Maplewood. Our lawyer itemized the closing costs with us and said a title search would be $2,000--this seems shockingly high to me. Any attorneys/otherwise experienced folks out there who can tell me if I'm getting ripped off?

The price is likely correct as it includes an insurance policy.

But to your question, in my opinion, yes you are getting ripped off. The work done and the risk involved does not match the cost. IMO.

There was a title search/insurance-related thread a few months back ....

This amount is in the ballpark. We paid a few $$ more when we closed a couple months ago.

The whole thing is run like a perfect scam. You can't get your foot in the door of your new house without financing. You can't get financing without running title search & insurance. They've got us over a barrel.

But then again, if you buy a house, you do want to be sure that it IS YOURS after all.
