You might get a better response if your header didn't say "August". Just a thought.

I think the word "queer" is derogatory. Can we change the thread to Gay/Straight? Every time I hear the word queer, it is in the derogatory sense.

Main Entry: [3] queer
Function: noun
Date: circa 1812
: one that is queer; especially usually disparaging

Main Entry: dis•par•age
Pronunciation: di-'spar-ij
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): -aged; -ag•ing
1: to lower in rank or reputation: DEGRADE

consider it done. I'm not sure what disctionary you looked up the word and I'm sure it's outdated, but the important thing is that we all feel comfortable.
As a wordsmith myself, I used queer because I deplore the use of more and more abbreviations, i.e. l/g/b/t, which is batted around quite a bit, too.
hope to see you at another event,

Then would that be the "Gay/Straight Eye for a Straight Guy" TV show?

I agree that queer is derogatory when used by non-queers for us. However gays/lesbian using queer seems to be more acceptable. I agree that we need a word that is inclusive of gay/lesbian/transgender people.

I fail to see why a special term is needed. Why not simply say that everyone who wants to come is invited? Surely, "everyone" is the most inclusive term that can be proposed.

hi Joan, I started this posting because I didn't have any gay or lesbian acquaintances here in MW, everyone seems to be in NY.
It's not meant to exclude my straight friends, but on this planet anyway, gays have alot in common in the way of shared experiences, etc...
Plus, I'm single here in the burbs and sick of doing the personals.
Does that help?

yes, be there or be square. We've added a 2nd category--best alternative for the word straight.

I hope ALL the human beings who've posted here plan to come to the potluck/cookout/birthday party/housewarming party.

Thanks for a great party, Mary Ann.

A question arose in my mind. The party was wonderful but why were Jason and I the only gay men there. Lots of gay women and straights. Surely there are more gay men in Maplewood. We had quite a turnout at our get together in August.

Hi - there's a thread in Education titled Heather has two Mommies. Potential new neighbor looking to see how welcoming our school system and families are. Thought those of you with kids might be kind enough to ease her mind.

John, maybe the gay men just didn't know about the event. There's a gay men couple up the block from me, so surely, as you say, there are more.

I know there are lots of gay male couples/singles etc. And they are on Maplewood Online. There were quite a few at our get together in August. I guess all of them had other committments on Sept 14.
