Perhaps I am unlucky, but I haven't had any good experiences in the Goat. I had high expectations for this place. The first time I went in was a few days after it opened. I ordered one of those frozen coffee drinks on the menu, but no one there at the time knew how to make it so I chose an iced mocha. It tasted all right but it was room temperature and the few ice cubes in it were melting when it came to the table. I let it slide. I thought, new place...some wrinkles to iron out.

The second time I went in was four weeks after they opened (I overheard one of the owners tell a visiting vendor). I had some appointments in the morning and had to catch a train into the city around 2:00 so I thought I would give their food menu a try. There were only four customers at the time. When I came in, I was uncertain if I should go straight to a table or order at the counter. So I asked. I was assured by the young man at the counter that someone would take my order. I was ready rather quickly and I summoned him, but he didn't come. For a long time (12 minutes...I timed him). When I ordered a turkey wrap, I was told they were out of turkey. So I chose a chicken one. Perhaps I'm not getting it...perhaps this place is supposed to be laid-back, but I waited a really long time for my wrap. And when it came, it was tiny and not very filling. The experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

A couple of days later, I went in with the husband on a Saturday afternoon. Again, the same young man was working. And again, my drink was disappointing. I ordered the frozen coffee drink, but it was so overblended, that it had no "slush" in it. It was basically iced coffee without the ice.

This Friday night we went in again, quite possibly for the last time. The husband and I went in with two of our friends around 11PM. (The live music was great, by the way.) But unfortunately, the service was poor and again, they were out of some real crucial items. This time, it was our friends who ordered something from the menu they were out of.

I am considering contacting the owners of this place. It's unfortunate that I'm happier with the chain restaurants in the area (Dunkin Donuts, Cold Stone) in terms of their service and consistency. I have been sorely disappointed in the quality of the restaurants in South Orange. Perhaps it is just my own bad luck...I haven't heard anyone else say they've had similar experiences. Is it just me?

Well, I have to admit that the food I ordered there was overpriced and very small portion, but it was tasty. Hopefully they are still getting the kinks out. Wait a few weeks and give them another try.
BTW, todays Star=Ledger, Savor section, has a phenomenal review of the place. Hope the article doesn't cause the place to be so overwhelmed that they can't get their act together. Service has to improve and the portions have to increase for the place to remain attractive.

and just a tiny complaint: I asked for decaf (and the server assured me twice that it was).
Alas, not.
