Somebody recently told me about UPromise and I just looked at the program's website to learn more. Apparently you receive a credit of 1-10% on certain purchases. It also looks like you have to do a bit of planning to take advantage of the program. Is anybody currently participating in the program? Is it worthwhile? |

We participate in Upromise, and while it requires a little attention how can you say no to free money. No matter what the amount. You are going to do a "bit of planning" anyway for your childs education, why not fold it into the mix. It also gives my extended family the ability to help out by registering their CC's and grocery store cards and so it actually adds up. Plus if you start when the child is young... well then.. you gotta love that compound interest. So, yes it is worthwhile. IMHO www.freshwater-films.com

I find it annoying, since they send me so much spam. I'd get rid of it, except that that would take a little time, too. I believe they can easily afford to chip in a few cents here and there because they're selling our purchasing data, like those "discount" cards we get at supermarkets. Tom Reingold

Tom, opt out. I get no spam from them. Just a monthly statement. www.freshwater-films.com

I don't get spam either. I don't know how much I'm accruing. I'm still under $50 I think, but, as Duncan said, it's free money. I haven't found the hitch yet. Duncan, what is the planning that you're referring to? Did I miss something I'm supposed to do? |

My brother has everyone in the family signed up, since he has 3 little ones. I have to admit that I pay no attention to how it works. The only thing I do is try to remember to pay as a credit instead of a debit card at the grocery store. According to my brother, it's worth it. |

We use babymint (www.babymint.com) its similar, though it does not offer as many ways to get money (like the supermarket card tie ins that upromise has, though those are really small change.) The main way we have made money is via the credit card (1% to the college fund). The reason we chose babymint over upromise is that upromise only allows you to contribute to one of two 529 plans while babymint is good for any 529 and we already had a 529 that was not a upromise plan. |

Greenetree - I don't think you have to use your credit card at the grocery store as long as you have registered your Pathmark or Kings card or whatever. Plus if your debit card has a Mastercard or Visa logo you can register it as well.

Love the Upromise "free money" socked away over $300 in 1 year (all kinds of bonus opportunities), but have been recently confused as notice from them seemingly indicate that they would no longer sweep to my Fidelity 529 Plan. Anyone understand what happened? Thank you |
