Just saw on the weather channel that the "entire East Coast" is advised to "make preparations," and I was wondering--other than stocking up on beer, what should be doing here? Think the ol' gal is heading this way? Thoughts, comments, advice, reminiscences welcome!

Good question. I was in HD this am and had to fight a crowd perusing the battery back-ups for sump pumps... And Shop Rite was picked clean of Cheetos!

Weather is practically a fundamentalist religion in my house -- the husband reads weather.gov every morning--even BEFORE opening MOL! (although since he does teach science--he gets to say, "I do it for work."). He's been talking about Isabel for a week now. This morning, I decided maybe I should listen.

I've sat through two lectures, with graphics, on this storm and it is going to hit the East Cost--although it's still up in the air whether it's going to hit Pennsylvania the hardest or us. It's sandwiched between two weather systems that are steering it towards the East cost, between Virginia and New Jersey (according to the husband---whose attitude is very different from the one held by my Flordiated parents--they just take hurricane warnings as a sign that it's time to buy more cold cuts).

This morning, while he checked out back systems, I was dispatched off to Pathmark to get water, batteries, crackers, peanut butter and kippers.

Husband is disappointed to hear that battery backup sump pumps are already out at HD--since the plumbers were coming on Thursday to install one. Oops. Guess we will be rolling up the carpet in the basement.

On this topic.. What is the best source for non alarmist information. I am sooooo sick of the hyperbole employed by the local media when it comes to storms. I need some decent, calm information about likely track, expected arrival and what not for this area.

luanda,

I think that the thunderstorms and very windy weather mentioned in your post for Thursday and Friday assume that we will have some effects of the hurricane. I don't think that there is any reason for panic but it is always a good idea to be ready for a power outage or other disruption for a day or two even when there is no such storm in the forecast. August 14th should have reinforced that for everyone, whether or not your home was directly affected then.

deborah -
Red wine might be a better choice, unless you don't mind warm beer. Chips are an absolute must have. Consider also keeping extra charcoal/gas for the grill. You may need to cook everything in the freezer if you are without power for any substantial amount of time.

pmart I like your suggestion. Definitely have to stock up on the red wine.

I couldn't believe today I went to Shope Rite for my regular shopping, and had circle the parking lot twice to get a space. The lines in the store were down the isle. There was no half and half left, hardly any milk, it was unbelievable.

And yes, I returned my shopping cart.

I usually try to ignore the doomsdayers, the media, the worriers, when it comes to bad weather forecasts. But, having been through one fairly minor hurricane -- Bonnie, in 1998, a Cat. One / Two storm when it hit -- I am taking this threat rather seriously.

For now, I have two rather stupid questions:

1. We're scheduled for big trash day/bulk trash day on Friday. Think we'll have pick-up? Guess I should call the town.

2. If there is a hurricane, and the weather is really bad -- you ain't felt nothin' til you've felt 100+ mph winds -- and you're at home, and the dog has to go, what do you do? We're still pretty new at this dog-ownership business.

(Told ya they were stupid questions.)

Well, I got the answer to my first question: Waste Management won't know until Thursday whether they'll do Friday pick-up, I'm told. They can be reached at 800 371 7329.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE UPTON NY
400 PM EDT TUE SEP 16 2003

..TRI-STATE REGION EXPECTED TO ONLY BE BRUSHED BY HURRICANE ISABEL'S
EFFECTS AS IT MAKES LANDFALL WELL SOUTH OF THE REGION...

HURRICANE ISABEL CONTINUES TO MOVE TOWARD THE MID-ATLANTIC
COAST...AND IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL ALONG THE NORTH CAROLINA
COAST EARLY THURSDAY AFTERNOON. ISABEL IS THEN FORECAST TO MOVE
INTO WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON...AND EVENTUALLY INTO
EASTERN CANADA BY SATURDAY. THUS...THE AREA IS ONLY EXPECTED TO
FEEL SOME FRINGE EFFECTS FROM ISABEL LATER IN THE WEEK.

LONG PERIOD SWELLS WERE ALREADY AFFECTING THE WATERS SOUTH OF LONG
ISLAND...AND WILL GRADUALLY INCREASE DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.
AS A RESULT...HIGH BREAKERS ALONG ATLANTIC FACING BEACHES HAVE
CREATED DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS AND ROUGH SURF. AS THE HIGH SURF
CONTINUES TO INCREASE...MINOR COASTAL FLOODING...BEACH EROSION AND
WASH OVERS WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY LIKELY...ESPECIALLY ON THURSDAY
NIGHT AND FRIDAY AS SEAS TOP OUT AROUND 20 FEET.

SHOWERS WITH LOCALIZED HEAVY DOWNPOURS ARE POSSIBLE ALONG WITH GUSTY
WINDS AS ISABEL MAKES ITS CLOSEST APPROACH THURSDAY NIGHT AND INTO
FRIDAY. DEPENDING ON WHERE THE OUTER RAIN BANDS OF ISABEL MOVE OR
DEVELOP... LOCALIZED FLOODING IS POSSIBLE. AT THIS TIME...WINDS ARE
EXPECTED TO HAVE LESS OF AN IMPACT DUE TO THE CURRENT TRACK...BUT
GUSTS COULD REACH AS HIGH AS 40 MPH THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY.

I just got a new roof from Scott's and am not a wee bit worried about the hurricane! They did the entire job in 9 hours and I can't wait to write them a letter of recommendation. As soon as isabel power washes my house, Rutgers will be painting it.

Here's a dose of irony. Expecting the brunt of the storm to hit early tomorrow morning and during tomorrow morning's rush hour, one of my coworkers is going to bring some work home with her so that she can work from home...but she has an SUV! Isn't this thing kind of thing you buy an SUV for?

In fairness, however, it is one of those "pretty" SUVs, a Lexus RX330. It looks more like a Hot Wheels toy car than a work machine.

LOL Sarge. I am glad someone else shares my antipathy for car based SUVs. :-)

I couldn't help but notice that people are getting an early start on their morning commute today. Both the parking lot and my 6:20 train were much more crowded than usual.

If I decide to take the ferry from Hoboken to Pier 11 on Friday morning instead of increasing the crowding on Midtown Direct, I am bringing my own personal flotation device!

You are like a hurricane: there's calm in your eye.

There's somewhere safer where the feelings stay.
I wanna love you but I'm getting blown away.
