Does anyone remember the name of a toy that you sat in, had two large wheels (with spiral designs on each wheel)? You sat on this "deck" and the inside of the two wheels had handles on them for you to grasp and spin. This spinning motion propelled the rider. I'm stumped. Any guesses? |

No, I wasn't talking about a sit and spin. This thing actually rolled down the driveway powered by the driver. To turn this contraption you just cranked one side faster than the other. |

That's not exactly it but very similar. This is probably just a more "modern" version. Thanks. |

rachael - you are the second person to say that name but I can't find photographic proof to verify. My officemate is not convinced. It is quite possible that the name has undergone many iterations and that is the cause for him not knowing or believing. Thanks, |

The Big Wheel was a plastic tricyle (thank you Google Image Search for verification). I think Crazy car is right, but I'm having trouble verifying, in spite of having loved it as a kid. I've seen a newer variant of it under another name in one of the kiddie catalogs that we get. |

It's spelled "Krazy Kar." There's a kids, catalog call "Back to Basics Toys" that carries it and sells on the web through another toy company. I could not find any pictures of the ones from the old days which were red and yellow but here's what they look like now: http://www.etoys.com/genProduct.html/PID/65228/ctid/17/ls/default The really bizarre thing I found when searching on the web for the picture was ANOTHER message board with someone (sportsnut's doppleganger?) asking the same question! (http://inthe00s.com/archive/inthe70s/1056909219.shtml) ___________________________________________ Subject: Name of kids toy with two HUGE wheels Written By: dugn on 06/29/03 at 11:53:38 I have searched high and low and can't seem to find the name and a picture of the kids toy from the 70s that ended up being competition for the Big Wheel. It was a round, orange piece of plastic that you sit in - with two huge black wheels that you would grip with you hands by handles on the inside of the wheels. Using your arms, you could rotate yourself forward, backward - or by turning wheels in oppostie directions, you could easily spin in place. Someone help me. What was this called (and are there 10 on eBay I can buy)? ;D -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Name of kids toy with two HUGE wheels Written By: Secret_Squirrell on 06/30/03 at 02:54:31 Oh my god, I remember this toy! It wasn't a "Green Machine"... crap! I can't remember what it was called. ??? It was pretty cool and I can remember begging my parents to buy me one for Christmas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Name of kids toy with two HUGE wheels Written By: dugn on 06/30/03 at 21:08:19 Yes Yes Yes ! We're SO close! It's on the tip of our tongues! What is it?!?!? The Green machine was the green version of the Big Wheel - but that orange and black thing - what the HECK was it?!??!?! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Name of kids toy with two HUGE wheels Written By: TripsMom on 06/30/03 at 21:58:54 I had one and it was called a "Krazy Kar". Didn't see any on Ebay. They're made by Marx toys and go for about $50.00 now. :-/ http://www.un4gettabletoys.com/images/krazy%20kar.jpg -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Name of kids toy with two HUGE wheels Written By: Secret_Squirrell on 07/01/03 at 00:10:30 Holy cow, that's it!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I had to print off a picture of that and show it to some of the guys at work. I mentioned this thread to them and we've been wracking our brains trying it out. We'd all remember it but couldn't recall the name. They say memory is the second thing to go. What was the first, again?? ;) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Name of kids toy with two HUGE wheels Written By: TripsMom on 07/01/03 at 08:34:18 Well, there's an issue with my previous waistline. ;D -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Name of kids toy with two HUGE wheels Written By: Holly on 07/01/03 at 18:49:59 Quoting: I had one and it was called a "Krazy Kar". I never played with this thing (I am 36, so I definitely remember Sit n Spins, Big Wheels, etc., so it must have just passed me by), but it looks like a blast. I bet my kids, both under age 5, would love it. Is it safe? How fast does it go? Is this the kind of thing that our parents hated but we loved? Did anyone wind up with major injuries on one of these? I am trying to get Xmas ideas. |

I seem to remember them coming out around 1969--it's a hippie era design (a crazy trip, get it?). You really have to wear flowered culottes while you drive one to get the full effect. |

Thanks again. Nan, that was almost exactly as I remember it (and no I don't have a doppelganger). My officemate is still not convinced as the name doesn't sound familiar to him. But its hard to argue with photographic proof. |

Susan, this toy would never sell today. It doesn't have the various seat belts, safety harnesses, etc. required to protect kids from themselves nowadays! However, it is probably the most fun toy ever! |

Sportsnut - I'm not sure I remember that name either--my first thought, when I read your post, was "Big Wheels." I knew where to look for the name because I did remember seeing it pictured in the "Back to Basics" catalog (which is a good resource for finding old toys that they still make). Maybe the Marx company changed the name when they started making it again (I don't remember the original manufacturer)--and Big Wheels became associated with those Tyco Trikes. Or maybe my memory is even worse then I thought.

We must have poor memories. My old college roommate (the king of useless knowledge) knew it instantly as "Krazy Kar" and claims to have home movies of his brother riding his favorite toy circa 1972. P.S. Love the back to basics catalog. |
