What's the scoop on Holloween in s. orange / Maplewood (i live on the border)? Do the kids go out on the 30th or 31st? Any special customs I sould be aware of?

I have a 3 year-old and I want to make sure I am up to speed on all of this stuff this year.

The South Orange Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Main Street South Orange will sponsor a Halloween Party for the children. The events typically includes a parade from Spiotta Park down to the train station. Local businesses participate to make it a memorable occassion for the kids. Keep an eye open in the local paper for more details.

Maplewood also holds a large parade - more like an event, with costume contests, live music etc. The town merchants participate. They block off Maplewood Ave. for a couple of hours.

Also, Morrow Church has a Halloween party for the kids in the community - I think it's usually held on the Friday evening before Halloween and benefits UNICEF.

But - your best advice is from pizzaz - the News Record will be a good source for dates and times.

And yes, some kids go door to door on Halloween - although since the towns started having big celebrations, I get fewer and fewer local kids each year.

I have taken the day off each halloween to go to the parade in Maplewood with my son. We do the parade and then dinner and the Trick or Treat the neighborhood.
