For various reasons, I've been thinking a lot recently about why and where people volunteer. I'd like to hear from any of you who currently volunteer your time. I'm particularly interested to know whether you sought out opportunities that matched certain skills that you either have or wish to cultivate, or whether your choice was driven by personal experience (for example, your mother died from cancer, so you now volunteer at a hospice).

On a related note, having moved here from Bergen County, they have a great web site for finding volunteer opportunities (www.bergenvolunteers.org). I'm not aware of a similar resource in our area.

I volunteer every year to the MayFest. Supporting our town, Springfield Ave. and showing support for the local store owners. Plus its really fun.

Over the years I have done quite a lot of volunteer work both in Maplewood and at work. I have done most of this volunteer work because friends and/or relatives asked me to or because I identified a need which no one else was willing or able to address.

I do it because I learn a lot about what's really important. Mostly I tutor or write, since that's where my skills are, but I would love to say, help build a house!

I'd whole-heartedly second SoOrLady's vote for Habitat for Humanity. Great cause ...

There's also "Women Build" -- which is a women's only Habitat for Humanity group (built by women, the houses will go to families headed by women). Many of the churches and synagogues in town are involved.

I volunteer for the local access TV, "SOMACOM", channel 35 in Maplewood, and 26 in S.O. We make programs of very local interest about the two towns. If you volunteer, you can decide what aspects of the productions you want to do: behind the scenes on camera, edit, produce, etc. or be in front of the camera as an interviewer, etc. It is creative and the other voluteers are fun to work with. We meet at Columbia HS on Tues. and Thurs. evenings from 7:30PM to around 10PM.
I also volunteer to work with my local Quaker Meeting in Montclair. We have no paid clergy, so everyone that attends the Meeting gets involved in the work of the "Religious Society of Friends."
