Hi,
My good friend just started teaching english in an urban high school and wanted to created a library of "youth-friendly" classics for her classes. I know Maplewood library in having a sale soon but does anyone know of any good inexpensive used book stores. Thanks!
Kelly

A good choice would be The Strand main location near Union Sq in the city. It's on 12th & Bway. Go (almost) all the way to the back on the main floor -- on the right side you'll find a good variety of fairly inexpensive "classics".

For their other locations: http://www.strandbooks.com/locations/

To browse their selection of Classic paperbacks: http://www.strandbooks.com/base/base.php?dept=140600

Nostalgia Alert: The Strand is the biggest (and nearly the last) of what used to be dozens of bookstores in that area.

You can also try searching for "bookstore" on this board. There were some posts a while back.

I came across an ad for The Paperback Book Exchange in Union on a diner's placemat. Although I have not checked it out yet....2704A Morris Ave. 908-687-4567, you may be interested in somthing locally. The ad reads "bring in up to 20 used books for exchange for store credit..."

The Paperback Book Exchange is one of those overpriced chains that actually charges more than the cover price for older paperbacks.
You can drop into the main Maplewood library and pick out paper or hardback books from the cart, between booksales - I've found lots of good stuff there. And just about any second hand store or church rummage sale may have good pickings, at much better prices.
The Montclair Book Center on Glen Ridge Ave, off Bloomfield Ave across from Church St. (near the big movie theater) has cheaper books outside on the carts, a la Strand.

I recently went to the Paperback Book Exchange and they appear to be out of business.

I'm also a huge supporter of the Montclair Book Center. It's one of the nicest used stores I've been to.

Another option is thrift shops, especially near colleges/universities. My church has a great one in NYC, called Marble Thrift Shop, and I bet if your friend called and explained the situation, they'd happily help her out with both selection and low cost. It's on 3rd Ave at E 27th st. But I am sure there are millions of options closer to home as well...
